My 8 month old G37X Sedan has skin cancer

Postby muhle » Mon Feb 08, 2010 10:47 am

I have rust around the edges of my truck lid and rust perferating the trunk lid. Should I be worried about a larger issue on the car? What are my options as an owner to have this repaired?

Take it to the dealer, something isn't right.

I have talked to th dealer and sent pictures... I was told that once they have approval from Nissan, they will strip, prime and paint the trunk lid... I'm worried that they won't be able to achieve the same factory finish.

Might not be the scratch guard paint but it should match up.

Do you have pictures of the rust? Last person who posted pictures saying they had rust spots showed them also on their bumper (which is not metal) which lead me to believe it was something else. Not saying you don't have rust, mind you

Yow.....The underside of the body look ok? Specifically where the body seam welds are. I'd have that car gone over with a fine toothed comb.

I will ... I'm very worried about this situation and the potential of a real issue. I love this car ... I would hate to classify in the same category as my 1996 Ford Windstar.

Something went wrong - either in the factory with the surface preparation or in a post-manufacture exposure to something - acid? I would prefer to get a factory painted replacement part - factory prep involves a corrosion protection layer under the primer and paint layers. I'm not sure what that corrosion protection layer will be in a strip and repaint scenario as that layer clearly needs to be stripped and replaced. I'm not sure how much of the car is painted in one block - if the trunk is painted separately from the hood or body and then attached. If separately, hopefully the damage is limited to your trunk lid.

I think this is the first time I've seen rusty G.

It seems like manufacturing defect to me. Some rust comes thru the paint. I've seen rust on the edges on other cars. Main reason in the cold climate when you have ice build up between the trunk and the body and you close the trunk. Basically the ice chipping the paint. Usually the bottom part or around the edges mostly the corners. But it seems like that is not the case with your G. Check around to see if you find more.

I think you are fine but make sure there are no other body panel rusting. Let the dealer take care of the painting. Hope everything turns out good.

I have a similar problem with my 2008 G, but my rust isn't around the edges. Very disappointing in a less than 1 year old car. I talked to the dealership when the first spot showed up and they didn't want to do anything about it.

Did you try another dealership or call Infiniti corporate? If I find rust on mine I would expect it fixed in most instances. Now, if it were at an area where I or someone else had nicked the paint then that would be a bit different. Random rust spots is simply unacceptable.

wow when i did body work i only saw this on real old cars or edges of places that were high traffic areas and got nicked... thats real disturbing to see on such a young car...

+1

i would try and get a factory painted trunk lid (if that exist) over a repaint... or at least get a new unpainted trunk lid and have them repaint the new one... then you wont have to worry about what ever defect causing the rust to reoccur... plus you will have a warm fuzzy knowing its not the same trunk lid

Thanks for the welcome audtatious. I plan to talk to the dealer again soon. I didn't push very hard for warranty coverage when I first spoke to them, but the problem seems to be getting worse. Hopefully I won't have to contact Infiniti corporate.

Just got my 2007 G35X washed today. Got home and thought I saw a spec of dirt on the trunk lid. Turned out that is was a bubbled up rust spot! I also noticed several rust speckles under the paint (trunk lid) that have not bubbled yet. Off to the dealer for warranty a claim this week.

That's scary on a new car?!
What happened to the triple galvanization process?

Yes, it was a brand new car. I purchased it in February 2009.

Update,

Galactic Infiniti has had a look at my rusting 2009 G37 Sedan... and the Great Oz has decided that this problem is worthy of a new paint job for my trunk lid. If I sound sarcastic... it's because I felt like a begger through the whole process.

Now I pray that the job is done well and that the paint matches up well. I still love my car !!!! but at the moment I am not impressed....

Wondering if I should have bought the 4.3 Genesis with Tech instead.

You should not have begged for anything. I would have simply said "hey, here's a warranty problem that needs to be fixed, how long will it take you and can I have a loaner M-series while you are fixing it?".

Damn I just bought a 2010 g37x. I haven't even picked it up yet.

Is this a worry I should have?

Is this a widespread problem?

Don't worry about it. There have been two threads about rust with the first one showing pictures of the bumper (which is not metal).
