Making the RB26dett transmission rwd instead of awd.

Is it possible to disengage the AWD ability of the Rb26 transmission by removing the front drive shaft and the front drive chain and then removing the clutch plate? If not, would the best thing to do be to make a female adapter for the transmission's male end and just run a shaft from the transmission through the transfercase to the output after removing all the transfer case internals?

to make the rb26dett just rear wheel drive, i think alot of people use the rb25det transmission.. supposedly it mounts right up, no problems...

You'll also need an RB25 oil pan.

For more information on the CORRECT way do to this, see http://www.buwaldahybrids.com/speed.htm

people have done it, but it required cutting off the awd output and welding a plate in place as well as other stuff, i cannot recall the post name off the top of my head but search for it... it is there

yes it has been discussed but unless you have a really good shop willing to do it or know a ton about it yourself its alot easier to just spend the money and get a 25 transmission.

I agree that it would for sure be easier to do a transmission swap and use the RB25 transmission, but its money that could be spent on something more fun considering that I would much rather have a close ratio 6 speed than a 5 speed. I have the University of Florida's shop at my disposal so I think that it would be a fun project. and I know I'll still need the oil pan.

Another thing to think about, everyone says to just swap the Rb25det transmission, but what about the atessa system? The ECU for the 26 should read a malfunction when atessa isn't hooked up, how have you guys gotten around this problem?

oh and Jerome, considering that the rb25det transmission was never meant to be on the 26, and that the 26 was never meant to be rwd, i don't think there is such a thing as a CORRECT way to do it, just different methods of achieving the same goal

We did it, it's not worth the trouble, save yourself time and headache's and get a 25 transmission.

This most likely wont help but I have heard of people swaping EVO 5 engines and trannys into mirages. By doing the same thing you said and just running the AWD transmission on a front wheel drive setup. They welded the rear end part shut.

What about a Nissan 350Z transmission? Would it work? You would probably need some sort of adapting plate, but I figure it might work.

The RB25 transmission will bolt right up. You could just use an RWD oil pan rather than hacking up a 26 diff/pan.
