Sometimes when I start my car, the passenger side mirror motor tilts the mirror to the maximum up position (to the point that the ratchets start slipping). I put it back down and for awhile it doesn't happen. Then sometimes it will decide to do the opposite and tilt them all the way down. This is before even engaging the reverse gear, so its not the rear-view position that is off. It just loses its mind.

Sounds the same as the problem putting it in reverse that isn't caused by not having the rear position stored in memory but having the normal position very low. That problem requires replacement because of a bad sensor, and a bad sensor might cause the mirror to move to try to correct the position whenever the memory positions would otherwise be loaded (when you are stopped and hit the button to go back to memory, or perhaps when you unlock the car / start the door). If it happens at a very specific time like that, you might see if there is a setting available to prevent that memory run from happening, I mean, if you are out of warranty. For instance, I don't have steering wheel position problems, or seat position problems, but I have the steering wheel and seat exit position settings disabled because I don't see any point in putting extra wear on those motors when I plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time, and on the off chance that they fail, I don't want my steering wheel in the exit position.

It sounds like you may have a bad actuator. This is a common problem with the M. My 06 has this problem. There is a tutorial somwhere on this site about how to fix it.
