Hey guys, I 'm trying to help a friend with an issue she has with her 2010 G37. She has an extremely loud start up and the engine starts knocking. The knocking is best heard in the lower portion of the engine. Has anyone had this issue before? The dealership says its a pully, but the noise is coming from the bottom of the engine like around the oil pump. Please hit me back with helpful replys thanks. :gotme

I have to assume your friend checked the oil?

If the dealer said it is a pully they must have run across this issue before. The vehicle is still under warranty so have your friend take it in.

Telcoman thanks for the reply. Yes, the oil has been changed, the noise didn't start until after the oil change. The car is still under warranty she just wants to be more knowledgeable when she takes it into the dealership. Tks.

Was the oil changed at the dealer or some other cheap place like Jiffy Lube?

Take it into Infiniti and let them determine whether it is something they are going to repair under warranty or whether it was due to neglect. If they come back that it's something Jiffy Lube did then you will have proof to go after them if necessary. Otherwise let them repair it. I don't see how Jiffy Lube changing the oil can cause a knocking problem with the pulley assuming there is plenty of oil and it's the right type.

the G37 is kinda loud cold start up, if you look the RPMss will be a little above 1000 RMPs at cold start up. This, as i understand it, is to warm the Cats up on cold start up. (after about 30 secs the loud snarl of the engine should go away, and RPMs will slowly drop as car warms) If you havent already noticed as soon as you shift out of park from a cold start up the RMPs immediately drop to the normal 500-600 range. So if your friends car is only loud on a cold start up this is normal.

now if this is happening on a warm start up then you definately have a problem.

using synthetic oil reduces cold start up noise on the G37.

Our 2009 g37 started knocking at 3000 kms. It mostly happened in hot weather when just idling or putting around. Although they tried several things to take care of the problem nothing worked and we got angry and frustrated with all the trips to the dealer. Took them 50000 kms to figure out that a gasket inside the timing chain cover fails causing intermittent low oil pressure resulting in knocking sound. Took them a month to repair it at Dilawri Infiniti Nissan Regina, Sk. We have since put 40000 kms on it with no further noise but recently we have noticed a similar noise again.
We have no confidence in our engine not failing us after having low oil pressure. They refused to replace the engine. They would only replace the timing parts and cover even though we believe the low oil psi would have damaged every moving part in the engine. The mechanic wanted put anew long block in, even stating it would have been less work but infiniti tech would not let them. I will never buy any nissan product again.
