Hi folks,

So, the Q45 didn't work out. The 2003 Maxima may work out yet, we'll see.

Meanwhile, just got a line on a 2004 G35X with 130,000 kms (~80,000 miles). Owner says it needs compression rods and a front wheel bearing. I figure I can do the compression rods (are they stay brackets?) in my driveway. Can I change the wheel bearing in the driveway, too, or is there any pressing in/out involved? Is it normal for a wheel bearing to fail at such low mileage?

Thanks guys,
Glenn

I believe that changing the wheel bearings are pretty difficult. You probably need an impact wrench to get the center locking nut off. You will also need a torque wrench to get the proper torque specifications when putting the new bolts/nuts on. If you have the proper tools, it's usually a 1.5-2 hour job. On AWD cars, wheel bearings tend to go out earlier so 80,000 miles doesn't seem unlikely.

Thank you, Lars. That is what I was hoping for.

Have you gone through the FSM yet? They should have steps on replacing them.

Hi,

No, I haven't. I was mainly interested in whether or not it was feasible to do in the driveway. Seems like it wouldn't be a problem. I do have air and the necessary tools. I would certainly follow the FSM when doing the job.

Cheers,
Glenn

There's a hub assembly replacement how-to available but it's for the RWD.....

Wheel bearings are a pretty common repair, even with that sort of milage. we keep quite a few of them in stock at my dealership.

If you don't have the resources to do the job yourself, just save your pennies and pay a mechanic/shop to do the job correctly and safely. :)

I'm learning the value of doing for yourself (if you have the time). You learn a lot more

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the answers. I have no problem doing most any work on my cars & bikes - been doing it for years. Over the years I have found and fixed quite a few "shortcuts" and other mistakes made at the hands of dealer service departments. I was mainly curious as to whether or not the bearing was pressed in and any special tools I might have needed. Also if it was normal mileage to need replacement. As it turns out, I just found out why the exhaust pipe needs repair (I didn't mention that) and maybe the compression rods as well. The car spent its first 4 winters in an eastern city so now corrosion is doing its thing underneath. I've had an eastern car before and won't this time. Too bad, it was nice.

Taking a second look at the '03 Maxima 6 speed tomorrow.

Cheers,
Glenn
