Start my car makes a little tap then at about 1800 rpm I get this tapping that increases with rpms, insides the car you only hear it 3-5k really. I've had to drive the car so I have been just not beating on it really although I've heard it's just a noise maker more than anything. I know I need to pull the valve cover off, cams and rockers and bleed the lifter and put it all back. I don't have an oil pressure gauge yet and here lies my question. I did an oil change about 3 weeks ago and found a dent on my pan its not huge and deep but its a slight dent. I heard the pick up lies really low in the pan and the dent could cause bad oil feed and I'm wondering if you guys think that how it went dry. Any help is great any tips to maybe get rid of my prob without pulling the top end apart would be much appreciated

Also I heard the KN HP-1003 oil filter is good on these motors, this so?

Post a video. You know how Sr20 sounds are sometimes. Could be various things. If your oil pan has just a little dent on a SR20 you could destroy your engine from oil starvation!! Replace it immediately.

As far as a dent in the pan goes, it really matters where that dent is. The pickup sits near the front of the pan. Most motorsets I've gotten, the shipping company jacked the lower pan up, so I"ve had to take ball peens to them to push them back out. I usually go a little crazy and bubble them out a bit more than factory just for the extra clearance. Now, the pan sits close, but you've got some wiggle room on a dent. I would say if it's over 1/4" of a dent, then you got a problem, but a few mils isn't going to kill your motor outright. Just pull the lower pan and bang the dent out.

SRs are quite noisy motors for head noise. Even after bleeding, mine begins to make a lot of tapping at idle within a few days. Pretty sure I just have some bad lifters, but I'm not gonna worry about it too much right now. The plan will be to convert to solid lifters in the future.

And as for the filter, K&N HP-1003s will fit as they're meant for SR20s. The book obviously only lists the SE-R, but an SR is an SR no matter the way it's mounted in this case. Usually I use HP-2008s as they're a bit bigger, but all of the local parts stores stopped carrying them for some reason. K&N still has them listed on the site, and the book still has them listed too. But the staff at the stores have no explanation why they're no longer in stock :\

True. I've gotten that from Yuri and Jeff back in the day with the sr20's. A small dent could make a difference. Most small engines/4 cylinders have very small oil passages. So if the oil isn't getting there like it should, then you will get a dry spot and eventually metal on metal wear occurs. That is why it is so important to change your oil frequently on these engines. People don't do it and then say "SR20's" aren't reliable. Take care of them and they will last a long time! :)

Regardless of the oil passage size, regular oil changes are a must for turbo cars. Turbos just degrade oil so fast from all the heat they produce. That's the main reason I run synthetic oil too since it has better thermal resistance.

Now these are answers I look for of this sorta forum! Thank you everyone! The dent on all honesty is quiet small maybe about the size of a quarter and not deep at all. Oil is changed every 2500 miles. I'm gonna pull the top end apart this week and see what's going on probably. Any one have a procedure for taking it apart? Not in the mood to snap a cam right now lol

If all you're doing is checking your HLAs, just remove the cam caps. Make sure to break the cam caps working from the outside in. Alternating the outermost caps until you get to the center cap. To keep the chain from getting off time, you can zip tie the chain to the sprocket. Then pull the rocker arms, making sure you don't mix up the shims. Lastly, you can pull the HLAs and rebleed them.
