I am relatively new here so please go easy on me.
I have come across a '93 Q45 that the seller says needs knock sensor(s) installed so I am trying to research what that procedure entails. When I search knock sensor, I find results like sluggish performance and down on power results in knock sensor(s) need replace. I have also found a long tail of woe titled "Knock Sensor Disaster" that chronicles someone's unhappy experience with a "mechanic."

What I am not finding it a detailed tutorial of how to replace knock sensor(s).

Could one of you who is "more in the know" direct me to the right place?

Thanks,
John

This thread was posted only 2 weeks ago,and in it I linked a detailed write up of how to do this job.....it is more complicated than one would assume! See here 96-knock-sensor-vss-replacement-inquiry-t601467.html

Thanks so much for the guidance. Seems I should have searched "plenum" more than "knock sensors."

This is no small job. That should help to take a little more of the price of the potential Q45.

Definitely a big job, and that was when all of the hoses under there were available... if it's like everything else Q these days, about half of them are non-stock now.

personally,at this stage of a q45 age and limited ability of all the needed hoses,I would not replace the knock sensors unless you need to lift the plenum due to leaking hoses.Not worth $1000 in parts {hoses} and aggrevation for the little extra power gained by replacing knock sensors IF you can even find them {many needed hoses have been discontinued}

Yes, in Ohio but also I have seen mention of knock sensors needed on various other samples.
I'm looking to take another Q45 to this year's Grassroots Motorsports $2015 Challenge.

I need to buy cheap and will need all the hp possible.

If it's the black on black one for 1500 it's mine lol. Nice car just can't afford to be out of a car for a week while I source hoses. Before the sensors went it had ALOT of power now the timings retarded and it's really sluggish on starts. If nobody buys it within a month I'm going to fix it myself and continue building it.

Not really price hustling, just need to factor into my equation how much it will take to fix the broken Q45 which then sets the precedence for how much budget funds are left to the improve the car over stock.
I have a budget/rules clarification question into Grassroots. That answer will dictate if this sample is in the running or not.

Still looking through a couple other Q45's. I would like to compete with another Q45 but I am also considering Lincoln Mark 8's as well as a few other choices.

the knock sensors are standard nissan. I purchased two in nissan oem packaging on ebay for $30 each.
As to the the work, If you can turn a wrench and follow the guides here its not too bad. I went to a pick and pull and practiced on a car in the yard. As for hoses, the pick and pull might also yield you some samples that you can take into napa and find something that will work. Replace the knock sensor wiring harness. Good time to replace the injectors. See the threads on BDM or SMP injectors. Cheap and good.

Since it's a 93, upgrade to phase 2 injectors if you can (94-96 style). I pulled mine including the rail from a junk Q in a u pull it yard. I then had Deatschwerks refurbish and flow test all 8. All 8 and the newer style rail are now on my '92. The work great, even under boost :gapteeth:
