Well, here is your chance to hold them accountable. You could talk to a lawyer and possibly have a class action suit against the city for negligence, etc. If other people have incurred vehicle damage, then you have strength in numbers. I would seriously consider it. They have 7 days to fix it? Does that mean if there was an accident or fatality due to an extremely unsafe public roadway, they would have immunity, simply by stating they "didn't know"?
If you feel like being active in your community, you could call the DOT, ask if they have a report of the particular road damage, (at this point they should.. you hit it like.. a week ago?) if they do not, then you could file a report, and follow up in 7 days. OR if they do, then you could ask when the report was filed and then ask how they will reimburse you for damages incurred.
I know it's not "fun", but as we all know, the govt (even local) isn't always on top of things that affect us daily, like dangerous roads. It's really up to us to keep the govt in check... can we really expect them to do it themselves? ha.. no.
I have a friend whose father worked for (retired from)the City of Durham (DOT or Public works idr) and it was known that the City would ignore the roads, pocketing the funds and spreading them across the 'bonuses' of the top tier employees, until the roads were so bad the State would come in and fix them. It's all a scam within the local gov, and it's 'legal' because they figured out the loophole in which to do it. Corruption is on every level of govt. It's up to us to address it.
