When i am checking the timing on the crank pulley with a timing light do I just look at it straight down? Or since the little timing mark is slightly to the left of the crank pulley do i check it from an angle?

Aim your timing light at the pointer just above the crank pulley.

what im trying to figure out is since the pointer isnt straight above the crank pulley when im checking it do i just look straight down at the pointer or do i look at the pointer at an angle to line it up with the the crank pulley? man its hard to explain what im thinking through typing.

I would look at the angle you are refering to so you are looking straight down the pointer...

really tho we are talking fractions of a degree of timing here so don't sweat it either way

its more than a fraction of a degree. i think its like a 2 or 3 degree difference depending on which angle you look at it. but you think i should just look straight down at it? thats what i did when i set the timing and its about 15 degrees advanced from straight above. i was just wondering if i did it correctly or not.

it makes a pretty good difference. OP, look at it at an angle so that you, the pointer, and the crank make a straight line
