Just bought a clean 06 M45 that needs a motor, suggestions?

Part it out? Find a motor? Re sell it?

Huge knock in the engine when you start it, but other than a rip in the rear of drivers seat, small dent in rear bumper and rock chips, its in great condition (120k miles)

The forum doesn't have a photo upload option, or am I missing it?

Suggestions? Thanks

I'd be interested in guesses as to what I paid, and actual value

Pending on how much you spent on the car you may just want to drop a used engine and sell it.

You could probably get a used engine for somewhere between $1000-3000 depending on how many miles it has. That seems easiest because it would cost the same to have a shop take the old engine out and replace the rods and anything else that needs replacing.

Or you could take the opportunity to put 20 grand into the motor and have it built out some and put a turbo on as well. You would probably be making over 500HP afterwards.

I wish $1-3k I'd already have it at a shop. I'm actually in the automotive industry, having a few customers check on engines. cost so far is $4600 engine, $1100 install.

As far as I know, the VK45DE was used in the Q45, FX45, M45 (Aka FUGA 450GT in Japan), and Nissan's special 350Z and GT-R for some races.

Jsam, I have been seeing some VK45s pop up on my local Craigslist recently. Depending on your location & how much more you're willing to spend on the car, it might be worth getting such a "new" engine. Unless you bought your M with the engine problems and at a discount maybe from an auction, it might be quite difficult to recoup your money.
So what features does it have? (Navi, cooled seats, rear entertainment, reclining rear seats, bose speakers in the seats etc). You could make a little money parting out the cool features, or those might just be the deciding factor to keep the car.
Regards

Idle curiosity, when you guys buy motors, in general, how do you know if its any good? And what happens if it doesn't work as it should after the install? That seems like an awful huge risk buying something like that you cant test from anyone you'd don't know or through official channels. Could that be dropped in am m35x with no modifications?

Normally, I want to see and hear it running.
I bought my qx4 motor from a junk yard last year for $240. No warranty, but my only hope was that on every piece of glass on the pathfinder it had been written that it had 110,000 miles and was running. Considering what those engines were going for at the time, I bought it on pure blind faith - It worked out
This VK45 that I mentioned however, I emailed the guy and asked if he had any video of it running before removal and what the source of the engine was; junkyard, auction, personal car - but the seller has never replied. Since I don't really need the engine, I didn't pursue the issue any further

Since I do these installs myself, I am not too worried about losing on labor costs on a bad engine, but I would not mind buying an engine with a warranty.

I think that it would fit without much modification except maybe to the driveshaft and maybe transmission, but I'm not sure what the M35 vs 45 chassis dimensions are.

Not to thread jack, but does anyone know if the VK56DE will fit?

It should fit with some modifications to things. I know someone makes a VK56DE adapter to a 6-speed manual trans for a 350Z (350Z normally houses the VQ35DE that our M35's use too). The main difference between the engines is a bit larger bore and a longer stroke, but the VK56 is based on the VK45. The larger VK56DE has a block size only a 1/2" taller than the VK45DE, and I believe the block length is the same.

I'm on the same boat. My 06 m45 engine just took a dump as well.Rings are done, car leaves the biggest trail of smoke, I'm debating what i should do with it. Only difference is that I'm still paying for the car :frown:

I'm a car dealer and we would sell that car for around $12-14k depending on condition. If that car ran through auction with a blown motor, I'm guessing it would be in the $3500-4500 ballpark.

Jsam, so did you decide to go the part-out route, or are you still willing to sell it?
