All of the gas stations in my area are out of the premium gas. I had to fill up today with 87 octane. I have an '08 QX56 with just over 1,000 miles on it. Hopefully it will be ok.

It will be fine, you may notice a slight drop in MPG, and you may also loose a couple of hp on this tank, but go back to premium on your next fill and you will be just fine.

ill say, don't drive it that much, and only fill a little with 87. never tried it, but would like to hear the results about it!!

it will be fine, the knock sensor will retard timing when needed, if it starts pinging back off on the throttle and gets some premium

The biggest question is, what elevation are you at? I'm at 5,800 feet and I run 89 in mine. I could probably get away with 87 but I figure the extra 10 cents a gallon isn't a big deal.

Elevation is the key. The higher the elevation you are the lower octane you need. The lower elevation the higher. If you're at sea level, run 91.

I have heard/read straight from the manufactures engineers that you can run regular in modern day cars that recommend premium.Like mentioned, the engine will detune with variable timing and slightly lower hp(around 10 hp) but it will be fine.

Yes, this is true. I actually run 87 all the time on my EX35 and I haven't felt any power drops.

The problem with knock sensors is that cause the timing to be retarded once knock has already occurred. Knock is never good for an engine, rods, pistons, etc...

But you will be absolutely fine. At least while it's new.

The Titan, Armada, and QX56 all use the same engine, so you can use non-premium without risking it hurting the engine. You will lose a few hp over premuim, but it shouldn't damage the internals.

I understand the replies made so far concerning knock sensors and dynamic adjustment on timing.

Just took a look at the owner's manuals posted here.

2008 QX56 recommends 91 octane2009 Armada recommends 87 octane

My assumption is the engines are identical and nothing changed for 2009. Can anyone take a look in the 2009 QX56 owner's manual and see if the recommended octane is still 91?

INFINITI is just a more baller brand then NISSAN so they recommend 91!

just like how you drive a BENZ and fill up 91 and you drive a honda fill up 87! lol

I know this is reaching way back, just brows'n. You are right about altitude being a factor. Low humidity lends itself to premature ignition (ping) Combustion temp is also a factor, as well as engine load. Higher combustion temp will also cause pinging and that is usually due to enging load, the more fuel you dump into your engine the higher the combustion temp. An example would be towing a heavy trailer over the Colorado rockies with outside temps at 95 - 100 degrees (I don't know if it gets that hot in the Colorado mountains but I'd immagine it could). The outside heat, low humidity and the load could all help to contribute to pinging!

Edit;I stand corrected on this one! Looks like the post I quoted got it right about altitude, I was all wrong! I think I was confusing the thinner air with low humidity. Anyway I hope my credability is not shot!
