I just got my 96 infiniti j30 a few days ago and the check engine light came on. Reading through the forums, I came upon some posts which recommended checking the ECM code. I found some information on getting the ECM code from a nissan maxima but when I went to try it on my J30, I couldn't find the screw you turn to activate the self diagnostic. Can anyone tell me exactly where this screw is located? Thanks.

Did you remove the ECU from the brakets? If I remember correctly the light and screw are hidden when assembled

Ok. So the screw is on the back of the ecu? I was looking at the ECU and it's in a sort of silver box behind the passenger side kick panel right? I couldn't figure out how to get the front of the box off though even after removing the screw at the bottom right hand corner. Any suggestions?

On the Q there are 2 screws holding the ECU down--maybe the same as the J. Look at the top right corner. I only have enough clearance to remove it after removing the harness.

2 screws need to be removed to move the ECU

unplugging from harness is not required.

self diagnostic pot and LED should then become easily accesible.

dont know if ECU codes changed at all as OBDII was implemented for 96 model year.

you dont take the ECU apart, you just disconnect the bracket attached to the ECU from the frame of the car.

I got to the ecu and there are two screws on the silver box itself. Two are underneath and two are on the ride side at the top and bottom. Which do I remove to get to the ecu?

remove screws attaching bracket (which is attached to the ECU) to the frame. the silver box is the ECU, you dont need to take it apart or open it.

Need to use an OBD2 scanner to read the codes on an OBD2 car!

Autozone will read your codes for free as long as it ODB2 (it is)

They will even tell you the meaning behind the code.

IF you do not have one near you check around with the other chain stores

Good luck
