A year ago my gf drove my car thru a storm in which caused streets to flood pretty high she drove it thru and it killed the engine water also got into the vehicle to wet the carpet. She let the car I went and sat in it by then water was just dripping from all around car. I attempted to start it nothing 30 min later it fired up but the rpm just reved real high when I pressed the gas. The car also didn't not want to accelerate about 5 mph it also was making a light knocking noise. Needless to say I got a check from my insurance the shop I took it to said it needed a new engine I waited over a while year nothing I found out he spent the money and never fixed my car! I am now starting to look at my car I need to know what I need to do to get this thing running I found out it doesn't have oil in it. The battery was dead as well. I have bought oil and got a new battery the only thing I have done was put the batt in to check lights and such. Do I need to change any other fluids before I attempt to start it?

Is this the same engine that got hydro-locked? If so then I'd say it's probably not going to start and could be rusted together internally by now. If you want to try then I would first see if the engine will even turn manually via the crank (socket + breaker bar) after you put oil in it. I would not worry about coolant if you are simply going to see if the engine will run.

I'd also start looking around for a new motor and get a lawyer to get your money back from the shop.

The engine was never pulled from my car actually no work was done to it except draining the oil I don't believe its hydrolocked because I drove it home after it had been flooded but I am not for certain. As far as the money goes I am working on a civil suit right now to get the cash back no telling how long that will take.

I would pull the plugs and give them a good look and use a flashlight to look into the cylinders if possible to see if they still look OK. When you put oil in I would highly suggest manually rotating the motor via the crank to get some oil lubrication to the top.

Can you determine where it's coming from? If a knocking noise it could be a rod...if tapping it could be a lifter.

It sounds more like a tap it sounds like its coming from the just underneath the valve covers. It sounds loud in the video but its not that bad in person. Check out my video on you tube please let me know your thoughts and Thank you too everyone who has commented

Video is not available

Sounds like a lifter-style noise. Go to the FSM: http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/infini ... nuals.html and view the EM.pdf for your year. Somewhere around page 100 is an exploded view of the cylinder head. If the noise is at the valve cover then that's the components causing it. FSM should also help you determine what is actually wrong.
