Figured I'd put this out there for anyone who was interested in how to change their fog light bulbs. This guide can be used to install HID's in their place or just replace them with other halogen bulbs. This should apply to all Y51 M's.

*Disclaimer* - I am not liable for anything you do to your car. This is just a basic walkthrough.

Also, you do not have to do it exactly how I do. Different people tackle things differently. This just how I do it.

Task: Replace the fog light bulbs (VK56VD)
Time:30-45 minutes
Tools/Supplies Needed:
  • Flat head screw driver
  • Two H8 bulbs of your choice or H8 HID kit (I recommend only using 35w HID kits in the fog lights as the fog light is too small to withstand the heat created by a 50w HID kit)
  • 10mm wrench or socket for the shield bolts
  • Jack stands/ramps
  • Wheel lugnut wrench

Process:

1) Jack the car up securely so you can get under it. Get proper equipment to do this, your life depends on it.

2) With the car lifted by whichever means you have at your disposal (I realize not everyone has a lift in their garage), remove the front wheel for the side you'll be working on.

3) You will now see this. Use the screwdriver to remove the push pins highlighted.

4) Also remove these from the bottom area.

5) You should now have the splash shield pretty much free from anything. Bend it back or remove it completely. This will give you wide open access to the fog light on the driver side. On the passenger side, it's between the bumper and the window washer tank.

6) You can see the bulb here (plug on the right). Twist the bulb counter clockwise to unlock it, pull it out, replace and then twist clockwise to lock it back in place.

Have you done anything with the headlights also? They look much brighter on the second to last pic.

No, that's just the camera. I did add amber LEDs in there though.

The images are quite accurate. They look like typical 3k HIDs.

The PIAA's are great fog light bulbs; I've ran them in numerous cars for years now. :dblthumb:

Thanks for posting pics and instructions but it's actually much easier than that. You don't need to remove so much stuff. I didn't need to take the wheels off or anything. You can get a better view and bit more space to work I was able to peel the fender lining back with the wheels turned and get my hand to the bulb. Drivers side is visible and nothing blocking it but passenger side is harder and going in blind. I've been meaning help my friend change his out and snap some pics but haven't got around to it yet.

Yeah, that's how I used to do it on the M35. Maybe it's just my car, but right now the splash shields are super stiff/tight. I tried to do that but still had to remove the bolts and clips, etc. to even get it to budge. Trust me, I hate removing my wheels lol.

As with most things in life, there are a million ways to get somewhere or do something.

I used this method as well. I was going to be on my driveway either way so I figured I would save the time it takes to jack up the car and remove the wheel. Definitely tight working space but not bad at all.

Due to my jealousy you are hereby barred from mentioning the at-home lift anymore. :nono:
