How to: Set up your PCV, Catch Can, Breather, Vacuum system on your RB...

Postby Coolwhip » Sun Feb 15, 2009 9:14 am

First please forgive me for typing "PCV, Catch Can, Breather, Vacuum, etc." multiple times as this will help make this thread more viewable when others are searching. And as I am no expert feel free to correct, add, and discuss onto this topic where needed.

The info needed is not limited to what is found solely in the RB section in which this thread links to previous threads, but the same principles follow much of all other motors.

Previous threads which contain dialog of RB owners configuring their PCV and catch can setups (the good, the bad, and the ugly)...

Ok now that you have researched and read through those threads...

Here are some examples of how you may setup your PCV, Catch Can, Breather Can, Vacuum, etc system:

Cliff Notes:
* Crank case must vent pressure that accumulates in the engine.

* Either venting through a breather filter, catch can with breather filter, intake manifold, intake pipe, or exhaust.

* Best results are found when the crank case is experiencing vacuum.

* Vacuum sources generally used are intake manifold and intake leading into the turbo.

* If using the intake manifold as a vacuum source one must use a 1 way check valve to prevent the crank case from being pressurized when under boost. (read: pcv)

* If using the intake pipe leading into the turbo for vacuum, source must be after the MAF (if equipped).

* If using the exhaust pipe exiting the turbo for vacuum, 1 way check valves must be used to prevent exhaust gas circulating back into the crank case.

* If venting the valve cover either through a breather filter or catch can with breather filter(s), the factory PCV valve and intake port must be blocked off preventing those sources from sucking in unmetered air. (read: vacuum leak)

* Plumbing can be made of various materials. If near high levels of heat, use protective/heat reflective material or hoses that can sustain heat. (read: do not have the plastic PVC hose near exhaust)

*Catch cans can be made out of various materials or completed units purchased from various manufacturers.

* Catch cans with internal baffling, steel wool, etc. have found beneficial in removing oil from vented vapor.

* Baffles can also be adapted inside the valve covers of the RB25 and upgraded on the RB26.

This system is as important as anything else to provide optimal performance and reliability. Providing a proper ring and valve seal. This system mentioned above is primarily focused on wet sump oil system RB's which differs when dealing with dry sump'd RB motors (which I will cover in another thread).

Hope this helps you guys out.

GREAT thread! Thanks for taking the time to create a central FAQ.

This is semi-only for RB25/26 though, right? Since the RB20 has the PCV valve on the intake manifold? Thoughts?

Same concept and principles applies to the RB20. Just the PCV is moved downstream than the RB25.

This gets my vote for thread of the year! Now there's no excuse for creating a new thread to ask how to run a catch can or PCV system.

So figure 5, 6, and 8 are crankcase vents going into the exhaust? With check valves?

So does the location of the pcv affect any of these setups on the rb20?? Just trying to confirm for myself and everybody else with a 20. Thanks

No, the check valve function on the PCV is allowing air in one direction (towards the intake manifold from the rocker cover). This is regardless to its physical location either it be mounted on the valve cover or the intake manifold or inline on the hose.

BTW, RB26's have their PCV located on the balance tube on the intake manifold which falls under the same relationship as the others.

Ricky are all of those diagrams above correct.
Too much info>hard drive overload>Disc FAIL LOL
Cause I thought there was like only one right way it was supposed to be setup, or something.
Think this info should be a sticky, great

No problem. I know the 2.0L one is different. Make sure you get the 1.6L one.

There are infinite ways to set up the PCV system. However, the one I'm most interested in seeing is the "trunk monkey" setup. Not many people have trunk monkeys as the vacuum source for thier PCV system but this would be interesting nonetheless. A good catch can is recommended to extend the life of the trunk monkey and reduce costly maintenance. See pic below for proper installation schematic.

hahaha! Classic

Someone needs to install a catch can on you so that we can catch all the crap coming out of your posts before it circulates back into the forum.

^^ I think we might have a new RB forum inside joke there eh? :D

Oh snap, I'm definitely doing the "monkey" mod, I'm going to be the first one I guess,

Where would one get a monkey?
Something like in the movie: "Jay and silent Bob, strike back" or something.
"It's just a junkie with a monkey", that part in the Mooo Burger was great too, wasn't it

Okay back on topic.

ive got a similar set up to figure 5, blocked off the eliminated the pcv, ran both of my valve covers to seperate greddy catch cans then ran two tubes to my dump after my electric exhaust cutout. system pulls vacume only when the dump is open, i figured that the only time im ever beating on the car is when the dump is open so thats the only time the motor would need vacume in the crankcase
if i have to be drug tested to keep my job, why is our government not drug testing everyone on welfare?

So...I was going to make this an article...but I can't for the life of me understand the diagrams...I'm a graphic designer. I've put together numerous how-tos. I've built my own catch can for my G. I've even written installation manuals and I STILL have no clue what those lines and circles represent.

I'll take some more time and I'll go back and draw up some better diagrams and have actual pictures of check valves, SS lines, different ports, baffles, etc. on the motors if this is going to be articlized (just made that word up).

Thanks

Great job on putting it all together! If you want, I can make the diagrams in Illustrator of Photoshop for you. I just need to know what each of the components are.
