How To: Change Your Intelligent-Key Battery

Postby Mr. Music » Thu Mar 11, 2010 3:01 pm

Since the old write-up on this subject seems to have mysteriously vanished, here is a new one.

How To: Change Your Intelligent-Key Battery

My ‘08 Altima displayed a 25% key battery life warning, so I decided it was time to change the batteries in both of my keys. It’s a simple process.

What you’ll need:
One CR2032 (or equivalent) battery per key
A 1/4 inch flat head screwdriver
A small flat head screwdriver (I used a 2.4 mm screwdriver)

What to do:
(Click on the pictures for higher resolution)

Remove the I-Key body from the hard key insert.

Use the 1/4 inch screwdriver to gently pry the two halves of the key apart by twisting the head in the indentation on each side of the key. You’ll hear the key snap apart.

Separate the two halves and set the top half aside.

Using the small flat head screwdriver, pry the old battery out of its slot.

Insert the new CR2032 battery with the negative side up.

Align the two halves of the battery, snap them back together, put the hard key back in, and don’t worry about your key’s battery until you see the 25% battery life warning again.

I hope that helped answer any questions you may have had!

Nice write-up. I need to do this also.

Another point that works for prying it open... if you eject the key there are little grooves on each side of the bottom of the fob. Because I tend to be clumsy I would probably gouge the heck out of the plastic and make it look scratched up so when I stick the key back in it would cover the scratches up. But I really don't care if my fob is scratched or not...

This one will probably get lost too. I dont know what the mods have been doing but I have sent emails to LBC and he does not seem to care. That's why I don't come to this forums very often anymore.

Sorry if this sounds harsh Ricko - But dude, seriously? You created a write up about how to change a battery in a key fob. Like the replies that were in your original thread, it's like creating a write up on how to open a door. Sure a couple people found it informative (I was / am shocked about this), but it was not anything that truly required any moderate knowledge transfer.

The write up I didn't find annoying, I actually found it a little humorous in its own weird way... What was truly annoying was the constant complaining about it not making it into the DIYs and riding the moderators about it. And now you don't visit much anymore because of it? Consider yourself lucky for wringing a custom title out of it.
