3-7 quarts....depends on how long you have system open and dripping while you are working! Why not just purchase a case{12 quarts} and after you change filter and refill to the correct level, go for a short drive to mix fluid, then drain/refill again to further refresh your ATF. This is assuming your current ATF is in OK condition and not discolored/burnt,

Unrtunately, even if you wait 3 hrs. or so, you will be diluting the 60% of the contaminated fluid left and all the detritus and varnish not on the pan (you are dropping the pan and replacing the filter screen O ring, gasket and one time use bolts, I presume).

If you want to completely change the fluid, look for a mechanical system like that offered by BG or Sun. Otherwise you are just pouring good beer in the toilet before you drink it.

I had my transmission flushed last year about 12k miles ago so i figured i'd drain it this year instead of flushing figuring the fluid is still in good shape. No discoloration or smell from it, just wanted to drain and refill this time around. So i should buy 7 quarts just incase i need them all when refilling this time?

Draining the pan will yeild somewhere between 3 and 4 quarts. I always use a plstic bucket that is marked to save me the trouble of chscking dipstick after I'm done.

Not sure what you are hoping to accomplish, but 4 qts. should be sufficient.

Always verifiy fill with dipstick.

Hey Brian-are you are admonishing the guy because he wants to maintain his car too much? If so, then this post proves that you're just contrary!!

This is the simplest way. Measure what you drain, refill the same amount, then check the dipstick to see if you need to add more.
