I see a couple of bolt-on kits are available with either a supercharger or twin turbo for our cars. Can the stock engine and transmission handle 450 to 600 HP without modifications?

I'm new to these engines/cars but I know the old muscle cars (iron engines) would need a bit of internal work to handle a supercharger or turbo(s). I would hate to spend $6K on a supercharger kit just to blow up my engine.

I think the weak link is going to be 2 things:

1. Transmission
2. Tune

I would think the one that puts out 450HP or so would probably work on stock everything else (or at least fairly close). Of course, things blow up in a hurry when the tune isn't correct, more so than engine components blowing up. Normally it's other components that need upgraded (fuel pump, injectors, etc) that you run into issues, and then of course with higher boost you run into detonation issues due to higher compression.

The AT would at minimum need a shift kit, but if you're gonna do it you should probably just have a place like Level 10 go through the trans completely.

Thanks for your reply.
Things can get expensive quickly. The GTM supercharger is a kit so it should be "tuned" (the kit description says it is "turn key").

But if the stock tranny can't handle it I won't mess with it. The cost is already pushing the sanity limits of what I am willing to spend.

I've heard 400rwhp is when things start to break.

It "looks like" the M37 and M56 use the same 7-spd transmission (however I don't know if the internals are different) and the M56 is rated at 420HP and 417 ft-lbs torque.

I've always considered 450hp to be the stopping point on the G. The 7sp seems to be a tad weaker than the 5sp but that may have been fixed. At a minimum you will want a tranny cooler installed and if you really want to be safe you can get transmission upgrades like those offered by Level10.

Thanks. On the Level10 website, their "700 HP" kit looks like just upgraded friction material and the various gaskets/seals. http://ujue5.xspw3.servertrust.com/prod ... 0-3004.htm
So the good news is that the tranny's gearing/case/shafts/convertor, etc.., are plenty strong.

I would say that's probably a correct assumption.
