unbolt it? it's kinda tricky to get to but it's just that simple, there might be some accessories int he way but getting to it is the most difficult part

disconnect negetive battery cable

loosen the adjuster bolt at the bottom ear of the alternator

back off the adjuster nut that is perpendicular to it

looster the front and rear pivot bolts

remove the belt

remove the both pivot and the adjuster bolts

unplug the wire harness on the back of the alternator and unbolt the ground and power leads on the alternator

reverse order to install new one

Unless you have a lift, you have to remove the fan shroud. If you do have a lift... go **** yourself.

Get a pair of Maxima fans from the junkyard and ditch the clutch fan for them.

What does having a lift have to do with removing the fan shroud? Why does that make a difference?

You can get at the alternator when the car is up on a lift. Otherwise, you have to remove the shroud to get your hands down there. Well, at least I had to on my 87.

Still doesn't answer what a lift has to do with it....

I got to mine from underneath with it simply on ramps. I'm sure a jack and jackstands would accomplish the task just as well.

LOL! I wish I had the money and room for a lift. That would be nice.

Yea. I was fine with getting under a car and working under it until about 6 months ago. Met a fellow Z enthusiast who worked at a used car dealership that had a few lifts around back. Did a little work on my Z31 on one and that just ruined me for life.

Ramps would be preferred on my part.

I know a guy that was killed when the jackstands he was using failed. Not sure on the specifics of HOW it happened, just know that the car crushed him to death.. and there were jackstands involved. It was my Mom's friend's husband.
