I am currently in the market for a compact SUV. I have shopped the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V. I was leaning toward buying the Honda CR-V. However, after reading owner reviews, the one complaint that kept surfacing was the lack of horsepower which is rated at 166 hp. That was pushing me toward the Toyota RAV 4 with the V6 rated @ 269 hp. However, I hate that spare tire on the back!

I really love the looks of the Rogue. My concern is the Rogue's 2.5l 170 hp engine. If 166 seems to be lacking in the CRV. What would leave me to belive that 4 more ponies in the Rogue's engine would be sufficient?Am I missing something here? Anyone else have the same concern?

Differences in HP between manufacturers doesn't mean much, especially when it's 4 HP.

There are a lot of things that will make a car feel faster or slower. Different gear ratios for one. Also, some manufacturers tend to overstate their HP claims, while some understate them.

Just take a look at the Corvette Z06 vs. the Viper. The Corvette is down about 100 HP, but it's every bit as fast as the Viper.

Weight also is a major factor. HP is irrelevant if the weight is different. A better measure is to compare the HP:Weight ratio. In theory, a car with 100 HP that weighs 2000 lbs will be just as quick as a car with 200 HP that weighs 4000 lbs.

We'll just have to wait and see on the Rogue. I wouldn't less HP figures bother you.

I previously owned an '04 4 cylinder Accord Coupe and my wife has a '06 4 cylinder Altima.

The CRV weighs about 300lbs more than hte Accord, but has 10 more HP than my '04, shorter final drive but the aeradynamics aren;t as good. Either way, it has plenty of power and in my test dirve (just for fun) of a '70 CRV, it felt adequate. It won't win any races, but it can get out of it's own way. That 5 speed automatic is very responsive and predictible.

The Rogue I expect like the CRV will be about 300lbs heavier than the Altima. Our Altima is faster than my Accord was and quicker than most cars with V6's. It's no RAV4 V6, but It will get much better mileage and I'd expect the handling to be a lot better while offering a good ride. The Rogue will also be a lot cheaper than the V6 RAV4.

With a 2.5l and an estimated curb weight in the 3300 lb range I don't expect stellar acceleration. The X-Trail with the 2.5 and 4spd auto got a 0-60 around 10sec... similar to the CR-V

That actually won't make for too bad of performance. Our '05 Tucson V6 is 3300 lbs and has the 173 HP V6. It's got more than enough zip. Nissan's 2.5L should produce similar power, but get better economy.

The 2.5 should fit the little truck well. I'm anxious to drive one when we get them in at the dealership

I am eagerly waiting for the Rogue. I plan to purchase a new vehicle this coming year. I don't want a regular car. My current vehicle is Jeep Laredo. It is ten years old. There are no suvs or crossovers out there that meet all of my criteria:Price, good mpg and a good peppy engine.I have read about CVt and Nissan seems to have done a pretty good job with it. I am ready for something new something greener.

I'd be willing to bet that next to the CRV, the Rogue will feel noticably more powerful. The Roque will make more torque over more RPMs than the Honda, so you'll have more "power-on-demand" and likely have better acceleration and passing power. Toyota tends to build motors similar in style to Nissan (torquier, lower-redline, broader powerband), so I imagine the RAV-4 will be similar to the Rogue in that aspect.

Really, though, numbers on paper only give you a very broad, general idea. There's so much difference in how and where engines make power, how drivetrains are geared, how different manufacturers do things, that anything under 10 hp between any two brands is completely negligible.

Test drive is the only way to know for sure.

The QR25DE is a very torquey motor especially in the 1500-4000 rpm band... 175lb-ft peak at 4,400 rpm. There is plenty of power for passing and accelerating. I am happy with it in the '03 Alty... I expect the Rogue to be even better when combined with CVT.
