If you have the time, know how, money, and are willing to have your car sit for a while then I would say go ahead and rebuilt it. Otherwise you are looking at a very costly shop repair or a loss if you were to sell. Another option is to buy a used engine from somewhere throw that it and rebuild the one your are going to take out. That way you can still drive while fixing the one. Good Luck.

Ya its called Hookah

The only thing I took there was the water pump. They hooked me up since my brother has known the owner for 5+ years. I don't think you will get the same deal if you just went there thats why I said to shoot me an email so I can help you out. This was done back in February but I'm pretty sure it was around $400-450. I dropped it off in the morning and it was done that night...

first of all a blown HG doesn't require a full rebuild just a HG replacement, but yes you can rebuild the complete engine for about $1000, thats if you drop the heads and block at a machineshop, I suspect having a shop do the removal, teardown, assy, reinstall I'l plan on another couple grand

I was actually told when I had mine checked out that it was going to be about 20+ hours for a hg replace and that just simply buying a new enigne would only be 15 hours of labour to rip it out and replace. Which works out to be just over $2300 for used engine and labour.

I do understand and know that rebuild is not needed when the Head Gasket goes but since your in the ball park you can play ball (maybe a bad analogy but you get my drift)If doing HG with engine taken out you might as well rebuildme personally when/if this time comes I will be either going VH45if I were to be sticking with with the VH30 I would definitely change the pistons to drop the compression and then go with a single mount rear turbo for that extra oomphBut both of these jobs do take a bit longer than the normal rebuild

And I hate this part but I think I saw a Z32 with a blown HG go for around 2K in Sacramento area a few months ago. The ad said it was extremely clean, is yours?

so for $2300 you can isntall an unknown engine in unknown condition, or for a little more you can install a new HG on a known good engine, or for $3000 you can have known good rebuilt engine?

yea that whole buying a used engine is a crappy idea especially since they are hard to pull out & put back in a Z32A buddy of mine ended up doing this, bought a blown engine Z32 (for intentions of selling it) bought a JDM engine installed it drove it for a couple of days to make sure all was fine and dandy and what do you know he had to replace it do too a bad rod knock going through the hassle twice instead of once sounds like a good idea

yeah, i'm definately going for the rebuilt engine because i wanna know that i'll have a good engine, i'd rather pay $3000 for that than $2600 for the head gasket

We do lots of engine replacements in Nissan, and Toyota and their lux divisions. Luckily we have two ATL warehouses full of JDM engines so we can visit and select the ones that might be ok based on externals and the look into valve covers. Plus the KARMA each engine radiates.

All these engines must be rehabilitated with new water pump, belts, hoses, spark plugs, sensors and R&R emission differences.

WE typically spend $1,000 for rehab + JDM price delivered + time to make selection + swap labor. $3,300 is cutting it close if you expect any kind of reliability.

V8 [Lexus/Infiniti] run about $1500 more or $5,000 with a real quality job and all new everything external that's wearable.

The above are $85 per hour labor pricing.

be weary of engine "remanufacturers" they cust some corners to maximize proffit, and you cna rebuild your own engine for less than their "remanufactured" long block

Wouldn't the machineing cost be close to the cost of one of these engines?I totaly agree though you should check them out as good as possible before purchasing and ask about a warranty/guarantee on the bad boy.I'm wondering if they are saying the NA is the same price as the TT, maybe that might start you on a TT swap.

some shops and some parts fo the country might cost a lot mroe or a lot less, but I had my block and heads rebuilt at a good local shop with a full gasket set for around $1200

the thing that I thnk throws most people off is the pistons, if you didn't destroy a piston you don't need new pistons, there are specialty Z engine rebuilders that sell blocks with forged overbore pistons, this adds to the cost of the parts as well as the machining, custom forged pistosn are about $1000 a set, less if you go off the shelf forged, and that includes pins, rings and locks and ifyou are going overbore or your cylinder walls are damaged you'll be looking at another $300 or so for boring
