I've carried a .500 a few times. Now that was a pocket cannon.

It's just freak factor. I find it quite impractical for any use, but showing off at the range.

my blackhawk or the Alaskan?

The blackhawk, yeah, it's more of a range animal though I might take it out for deer this season. It's more effective and cost efficient than using my car again....

The Alaskan, sorta. While you lose a lot of velocity with the short barrel, it's easier to carry and lighter. I'm a huge advocate of .44 Mag revolvers being the most versatile handgun you can own. I think it'd make a decent carry gun when loaded with a hot .44 Special. Probably something from Buffalo Bore.

I would carry anything .357SIG .40SW and .45 that fits my needs profile. 9mm is just not something I would bet my life on. At the upper range, .45 is the biggest I would field as a carry gun. I can shoot bigger rounds, but I do not enjoy and I feel it to be overkill so all downside and no up. Now, for just a goof off gun, the 686 is on my list.

9mm, with a good modern hollowpoint is as good as the rest of the big three. Placement is paramount with any chambering though.

686 is a nice gun. I'd have a tough time deciding between that or a GP100 when it came time for a fullsize .357 Mag.

Ultimately though, I say carry whatever one is comfortable with. I'd be fine with an Alaskan and some Buffalo Bore .44 Special loads. a weee bit big and meaty for extended carrying concealed, but it's doable. It's purpose though is a camp gun.

I'm with you on that. Some people get hung up on fashion and what other people say they have to have. I don't remember if it was Ayoob or Smith that say a good carry gun is whatever gun you will actually carry. I love my 1911 to death. It hits hard and it's compact, but the single action is not safe enough for my tastes.

The Glock 26 and the XDm 3.8 are the two I would carry.

eh, a good holster and making safe handling second nature will help that.

You may get to the point where you feel perfectly fine carrying a 1911

you've got the essentials down.

can I recommend a shorter barrel for the Maverick as well for home defense?

I haven't messed with the RUGER SR pistols. Haven't heard anythign bad about them and they're priced very well.

I'm a big fan of Ruger though. I currently have 3. (SP101, Super Blackhawk and 10/22) I plan on adding quite a bit more of them.

You should be able to find an 18.5" barrel for the Maverick for around 80 bucks. I have a Mossberg 500 that started life with a bird barrel like that maverick. It's nice having a few barrels though. versatility rocks!

The maverick is a deer hunting gun, so not sure I want to swap it to a no slug barrel. Have always liked the Rugers, I've been shooting that mark II since it was new. Only shot the SR40 for 150 rds, but so far seems great. And lives up to its low recoil rep.

I just found out that contrary to popular rumor, you can own a gun in Japan. It has to be a shotgun and there are a s*** of hoops and fees and paperwork and other BS like yearly inspections by the cops, but I am seriously tempted. I doubt they would let me bring my Saiga over here, though.

Yeah, I use it to, um, hunt boars, yeah. :chuckle:

It takes less than a minute to swap barrels.

It'll make a for a great home defense gun.

My experience with doing a full twenty round mag dump with full-power 00 buck makes me think full auto would make an AK at full rip look like a lazy sunday. It would sure clear an area!

You can see how much you have to fight to control the weapon. Also, check out hit right hand. That stock's adjustment know is chewing his hand up.

I am interested in his drum mags, though. Those must be newer than mine. I don't have what appears to be a follower assist on the back of those on my drum mag.

I've only had the chance to dump half a drum.
Damn saiga didnt want to cycle properly.
Shot a Spas12 rapidly, made me take a step back but managed to maintain full control.

Saiga Ak's (converted) are horrible IMO. Was my first but kept having problems with it, Sold and bought a Norinco. No problems yet. But i would have loved to let'er rip with a stock like that.

I did a full 20-rounder twice. It is managable, but I had quite a bruise on my shoulder the next day. My Saiga was set up before I bought it and the only problem I ever had was the trigger wouldn't reset. I fired up Google and discovered the trigger sping tweak that is sometime necessary. After that, she runs like a top and eats everything I have fed it. I have only gave it powerfule shells though. I would not be surprized if weak shells won't cycle it effectively.

I had a Spas in my hand at a gun show and have wanted one ever since I saw it used in Miami Vice. I just couldn't justify the expense for a used gun that I can't get replacement parts for, though.

Hmm.. I'm considering buying a Saiga Shotty now. Any advise on what to look for? Besides sticky charging handle, mag wobble, and Canted barrel?
00 Buck or slugs is what i cycle through my mossberg.
Have you tried the PDX1 ammo? 00 Buckshot pellets AND 1 OZ Rifled Slug.
Haha the price is what keeps me away from the Benelli M4 and The Spas12.
