A great resource for Nissan Sentra, Infiniti G20, 200sx, Pulsar, NX1600, NX2000, Tsuru, Primera and Sunny owners.

This is a write-up on how to clean your 1995-1999 GA16DE throttle-body, or simply to remove it. This is also a good deal applicable to the 1991-1994 GA16DE, with the exception of the TPS and IACV.

Tools Needed:

1. 10mm socket2. 12mm socket3. pliers (needlenose work great)4. Phillips screwdriver5. RTV silicon

1. Remove the factory intake setup. If you have the factory airbox, the MAF (mass airflow sensor) will have to be unbolted from the box. Also, if you have a strut brace on your vehicle, it will most likely have to be removed.

1a. Remove the connectors. There will be a total of three; 1 at the MAF, 1 at the TPS (throttle position sensor), and 1 at the IACV (idle air control valve). The latter two are located on the throttle-body itself, while the MAF is located adjacent to the factory airbox on 1995-1999 GA16DEs.

1b. Take a pair of pliers (needlenose work the best for this), and slide off the couplers holding the two hoses on the intake piping. One attaches to the valve cover, and one attaches to the throttle-body. Both must be removed.

1c. Take a 10mm socket and loosen the coupler holding the intake piping onto the throttle-body. Once the coupler is loose, pull the intake piping off and lay it aside. You might want to spray some cleaner inside of the piping itself (do not use brake parts cleaner, it will erode rubber over time) to clean out the build-up dirt and grime.

2. Remove the throttle-body.

2a. Take a 12mm socket and extension, and unscrew the four bolts holding the throttle-body onto the intake plenum.

2b. With the bolts unscrewed, open the throttle itself, and remove the throttle cable.

2c. With the throttle cable removed, gently pry the throttle-body off of the intake plenum, taking care not to the damage the aluminium in any way, or the gasket itself.

3. Clean it! Use a can of brake parts cleaner, which evaporates quickly and will not damage the mechanics of the throttle-body. If you want to go as far as dipping it in a bucket of brake parts cleaner, make sure to remove the IACV and TPS before doing so, since submerging these electric connectors and sensors would not be a wise idea. To reinstall the throttle-body, do in reverse, but apply a bead of silicon onto the pre-existing gasket to ensure an airtight seal.

Interesting Note: The throttle-body of the 1995-1999 GA16DE is different from the throttle-body of the 1991-1994 GA16DE. Most of the early generation GA16DE are swappable for the first generation SR20DE throttle-body, which is a much larger bore. By all irony, the single cam D-series of Honda engines has a larger throttle-body than the twin cam GA16DE of Nissan, disturbing?
