2005 Xterra SE. 40023 miles and the gas gauge went south. 5 miles later the SES light came on. 20 miles later the gas gauge had finally made it up to full. Code read a PO463- Fuel Sending Unit.Okay, after a ton of research I've found that it's not covered under the powertrain warranty even though it's attached to the fuel pump which is. I also found that its pretty common in Xterras, Pathfinders and Titans. So common that Nissan recalled all 01-03 Xterras to replace them because those units were designed to actually shut down the engine if they went bad. Nissan, in their infinite wisdom, rather than install a better unit, simply over-rode the shut down and is installing a unit made by the same manufacturor. So here we have a know, documented defect that Nissan is refusing to take responsibility for.My local dealer said they'd "try" to get it done as a courtesy repair, but there was a less than 50/50 chance of that happening. Total cost of this is around $350-450 at the dealer (they charge $100 just to read the code). So, I'm gonna do it myself. a $70.00 part.Has anyone gone done this repair before? I know it's in the fuel tank...that's about it. A step-by-step protocol to make this repair would be great. And, if you own one of the Nissan's listed above, and your getting around 40k on the odometer, you have a fairly high chance of having the same situation occur. Thanks

Took some work, but got the dealer to repair it under warranty even though I'm at 40k+ miles. If you want to know the process, PM me.

I'm having this issue with my 2005 X-terra, at 55,000 miles. They told me over the phone that it would be covered by warranty, but by the time I brought it in they had decided Nissan wouldn't cover it.

I didn't leave it there for the repair, as I could replace it myself if I could find the part, but I'd much rather have Nissan repair it under warranty. I suspect it's just a matter of time before they issue a recall on this part anyhow.

I'll be PM'ing you to get details on how you managed to get Nissan to cover this.

Haven't done it on one of these, but I know on my 2002 there's an access panel under the passenger side rear seat cushion that you can remove to access the sending unit. I believe it's a pretty quick and easy repair. Unbolt/unplug the old and drop in the new one.

It's a b!+ch on a pickup though because you have to drop the tank.

All the 05-up Xterra/Pathfinder/Frontiers are tank-drops. No way to get around it.

Have you read the service manual? It has a pretty good step by step procedure. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/xt...l.pdf

Oh what a bunch of ***! Dropping the tank is not fun, I had to do many crew cab frontiers and I don't miss it one bit. The Xterras were cake but I guess Nissan changed it to make it less tech friendly. What a bunch of ***!

Can you also pm me about the details? Is your sending unit grounded to the body of the car? Heard that a lot of issues with our tanks is due to bad grounding. Thanks.
