Not sure if anyone else watched the Nissan FY13 financial results announcement, but they listed the FY14 planned product launches (page 12 of 15 in the document below.

No details are mentioned, but of interest are two vehicles listed:
- New Global Pickup: I assume this is a new Navara/Frontier. Hopefully we can get a diesel here
- New Compact Hatchback: I assume this is the new Golf competitor for Europe. I hope that we actually get this one. I was looking forward to the current Tiida with the MR16DDT based on the reviews out of China, but it never ended up coming here. I think Nissan could use a sporty hatch above the Versa.

Thoughts?

I would like the idea of a Versa hatch with some meat to it. Although the current Versa Note's styling bothers me some.

Maybe it's a Sentra hatch?

So, we know the Compact Hatchback is the European Nissan Pulsar. A few thoughts: While the 2700mm wheelbase is the same size as the Tiida/Australian Pulsar, Sentra, Leaf, etc., this is actually the first car application of the CMF platform, so it is most closely related to the new Qashqai. That car has been well reviewed, winning car of the year awards (in addition to being the best selling Nisssan and best selling crossover in Europe), so a lighter vehicle with lower center of gravity should be pretty good. However, that long wheelbase means that it won't quite be go-cart-like in its handling, even though the short overhangs would contribute to stable cornering. But more importantly, this vehicle will provide an indication of what future Nissan and Renault compact car models will be like. That said, I hope we get this hatch in the US with the all-turbo engine lineup, rather than a watered-down sedan.

Another advanced technology integrated into the Pulsar's design are LED headlamps. Efficient and powerful drivetrains

In keeping with Nissan's approach to innovation and reduced costs for owners, the Pulsar's engine all-turbocharged engine range delivers the perfect combination of performance and efficiency. The 1.2-litre DIG-T petrol unit punches above its weight with an output of 115PS, while the 1.5-litre dCi generates 110PS and 260Nm of torque. An even more powerful 190PS 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine will join the range early in 2015.



Continuing Nissan's successful downsizing philosophy, the new Pulsar's engines are high on performance and low on emissions, with CO2 outputs below 95g/km*. The Pulsar is also offered with Nissan's advanced XTronic automatic transmission. Engineered to deliver the best of both worlds for drivers it features ultra-smooth power delivery at low engine speeds and positive, direct shifts under heavier loads.



Setting new standards for cabin space

Thanks to the longest wheelbase in the class (2,700mm) and clever packaging, the Pulsar offers considerably more rear legroom and shoulder room than its sector rivals. Indeed, with 692mm of rear kneeroom, the Pulsar is more spacious than many D-segment offerings.

Yet despite this it retains a compact footprint (length 4,385mm), making it easy to park in tight urban environments.



Energetic, athletic styling

Instantly recognisable thanks to its trademark Nissan V-motion grille and boomerang-shaped lighting signature with bold and energetic curves on the body side, the Pulsar was designed and engineered for Europe and will be built at Nissan's Barcelona production facility.



Embedded with the same design DNA that gives the Qashqai and X-Trail such powerful road presence, the Pulsar combines strong lines with immaculate detailing to create an elegant, athletic form. Jalopnik claims* to have reached out to Nissan and been told that the truck reveal has nothing to do with the US market. Makes sense, as that looks far more like an Eastern-market truck design (rounder and more carlike styling) which would never fly in the US, where we take our trucks square and boxy or not at all (see GM's redesign of its latest US midsizers compared to their platform-sharing world-market equivalents).


*I can't find the link now, because Kinja is the single biggest piece of s*** since the Ford Tempo and its search function is even worse. But I read the article. I just can't link to it because Kinja sucks. Have I mentioned how much Kinja sucks?

I've pointed this out before, but due to Nissan's moronic attachment to dual names for reputation sake (Stanza Altima, Pathfinder Armada, Versa Note) I can't really blame people for missing it:

The current Note (with an extra "versa" tacked on the beginning in the US because apparently Nissan doesn't consider US buyers smart enough to know that a small hatchback can be a replacement for another small hatchback even if it has a different name) and current Versa sedan are actually much smaller and built on a whole different platform (shared with the tiny Micra) than the original US market Versa. Why Nissan feels the need to mix 50 names for unrelated but similarly-marketed cars is beyond me. Park a 1st gen Versa hatch next to a Note and the Versa looks enormous. Same with the current Versa sedan next to a first-gen. It's like Ford replacing the Focus with a Fiesta but keeping the focus name. Confusing, stupid, pointless marketing nonsense.

I mention this because of your "Sentra" comment. It certainly looks bigger than the miniscule current Versa/Note duo. But since this whole press release is Global Nissan (not NNA) I doubt we'll see it under ANY badge at all. (Still a fun PDF to flip through for us auto business geeks, though!)

Also Kinja sucks.

I saw the Jalopnik article, but can't find any claim they heard back from Nissan. At least we know that this is not Europe-specific (they write their dates differently).

Customization features provide driver assistance in a variety of languages, as well as alerts, maintenance reminders and more.

While life-on-board is comfortable and convenient, the NP300 Navara has been designed and developed to easily and confidently handle heavy loads, while allowing ease of loading and unloading. Underneath, the NP300 Navara's high-strength chassis and leaf suspension have been engineered to take the punishment of intense daily usage, reflecting the expectations of pick-up customers around the world among the other improvements to the NP300 Navara's characteristics are a reduced turning circle, reflecting the importance of agility and maneuverability in city driving.

The NP300 Navara's powertrain boasts improved performance, with reduced fuel consumption and emissions, as well as a dynamic control braking system that makes for a leader in segment performance. Engine options have been developed for best in class fuel efficiency and emissions ratings, yet with impressive power output and acceleration. Models come equipped with improved versions of Nissan's 2.5-liter DOHC in-line 4-cylinder Diesel engine or 2.5-liter in-line 4-cylinder Gasoline engine. The new 2.5-liter DOHC in-line 4-cylinder Diesel engine features maximum power of 140kW and 120kW at 3600rpm, maximum torque of 450Nm and 403Nm at 2000rpm, and higher boost from a turbocharger with electrical actuator. Shift-on-the-fly 4x4 driving can be engaged while the vehicle is in motion. The VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) system helps improve 4x4 driving performance and safety, along with ABLS (Active Brake Limited Slip), HSA (Hill Start Assist) and HDC (Hill Descent Control).

The NP300 Navara's transmission options include a seven-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmission. The seven-speed automatic provides for low fuel consumption at slow speeds as well as better acceleration, expanded gear ratio for wider range of speeds, and smooth acceleration and shifting. The six-speed manual features enhanced fuel efficiency from low to high gear, while its optimized shift stroke makes for quick and effortless gear changes.

Overall, the new Nissan NP300 Navara provides fleet and individual owners improved productivity in the field and comfort on the road. This is thanks to the high quality engineering that has delivered a tough and durable frame along with a high performance powertrain, and a striking design inside and out for a premium ownership experience.

no mention of a V6, but that diesel 4 cylinder is impressive. 190 hp and 332 lb/ft of torque, with a flat torque curve-- might not need a V6.

After seeing the video, I don't hate it. I can't wait for someone to crash one so I can buy the interior out of it though. That would look sweet in our Frontier! :D

Report: Nissan Scraps Small Truck Plans, Navara Now On For North America

Our industry source who reported that Nissan would use an old version of the Frontier has reported back to us with some bittersweet news.

The reported next-generation Frontier, which would have been based on the bones of the old, first-generation Frontier, has been abandoned. According to our source, bringing the old technology up to modern crash standards was too onerous a task, and the costs were simply too high – even with using an already paid for architecture.

The big issue at hand is this: Nissan still wants to have a small, basic, fuel-efficient affordable truck, since they see it as an untapped niche. Their original thinking was that the D22 Frontier would let them get their in a cost-effective way (remember, small trucks are low-margin, difficult to price and carry significant regulatory burdens). But now that this option is off the table, Nissan is forced to use the all-new Navara as a starting point.

From a superficial perspective, that’s not such a bad thing. The Navara is a modern, global mid-size pickup that is a proven design and a sales success across the globe. The problem is that, as it sits now, it’s far too expensive for what Nissan USA is looking for. So, the North American truck will use the Navara architecture, due to its crashworthiness, and ability to fit a modern, diesel engine under the hood, but the tradeoff will be a fair amount of content will not make it across the ocean.

As with the now dead D22, Nissan Mexico will be responsible for engineering the truck to meet NAFTA standards. This “clean sheet” approach, if it can be called that, will cause further delays. The current Frontier will soldier on until 2018, when the new truck arrives. A diesel variant arrives a year later. The new truck will likely have a different look and stick to the original mandate of being akin to a modern-day Hardbody. But instead of actually being a a modern day Hardbody, it will be a revamped modern truck.

Nissan had planned to give North American truck buyers something truly unique, but it was not to be. We will be getting what is arguably the better, more modern option, but this new approach will just add more time, effort and expense to the program. The goal of a low-cost, fuel-efficient pickup is still in sight. Nissan will just be approaching it in a different way.

I'm glad SOMEBODY realizes that a COMPACT truck is something that would sell like free beer at Oktoberfest. I don't want a @#$% midsize truck. I want a COMPACT truck. I want a tiny truck with a regular cab and a longbed. I want a plastic floor, cloth seats, a 6 speed manual, a manual transfer case (none of this pushbutton s***) with low range and a STEEP final drive ratio. Give me a 2.0-2.5 liter four, normally aspirated with a long stroke and gobs of torque down low--I don't care if it idles so rough you can feel the truck shake...IT'S A TRUCK. I can think of exactly infinitymillion things I would use that truck for. I would beat the Hell out of it and I would NOT feel guilty.

I don't want a midsize truck with a V6 that's so huge it guzzles more gas than a V8. I certainly don't want a midsize truck that's big enough to house a small family in. ~150 ft-lb is plenty when your truck weighs less than 3000 lb.

In terms of car-based compact trucks... while I was in South Africa recently, I kept thinking about how awesome it would be to bring back a 1400 Bakkie Champ, which Nissan kept making there till 2009. Looking at the iDX, they could do something similar there...
