Microsoft has re-released Flight Simulator X in a "Steam Edition." So far the graphics are largely the same, but they have integrated a lot of the missions and such from Microsoft Flight, and expanded the visual options to 1920x1080 and widescreen. The best part is, it is being supported again, a DX10 client is in the works, and they even released DLC for it last week. All the downloadable 3party addons still work with the steam edition, and some have even been updated already by their developers. Microsoft is promising to bring the 3rd party addons to the Steam Workshop. I'm excited. Anyone else?

Already bought it. I got it on sale the other day for like 4 bucks. Good strategy they have, cause I got the game for 4 bucks, and am seriously considering the around the world expansion pack for $16.

MS made the Flight Sim series so confusing that even as a pretty hardcore gamer and flight sim fan (and owner of previous editions) I still have no idea what the Hell is going on. Which is which and how are they different and how are they the same? I know Flight is free with microtransactions but somehow it's linked with X, and at that point my brain just gives up and says "screw it, I'll go play some SpinTires instead".

YES. Though I haven't played it in ages, it's excellent.

DUDE, it has improved SO DAMN MUCH. Like, the SAS controls now have more options in the stock program than Mechjeb. You can target prograde, retrograde, radial, anti-radial, normal, antinormal, maneuver node, and standard stability control.

And the mods are just awesome now. Like, Kerbal alarm clock and Kerbal attachment system are awesome. I've got a rover with wings that folds up into an aerodynamic fairing.

I've never played Kerbal. I didn't think it was a flight sim...

MS Flight is completely unsupported now. You can't buy it anymore in the MS store, and if you fire it up, there is ext to no support. It links to dead websites that don't redirect, etc. They appear to have dropped it completely to revitalize FSX. I assume the microtrans model is coming since it's on Steam.

KSP isn't necessarily a flight sim. It's a space program sim. You build rockets like Legos and fly them to other planets in the Kerbal system. There are also air breathing spaceplanes though. I actually made a pretty cool VTOL plane with a huge surface area that handles marvelously. Pics to come soon. But the only downside is the aerodynamics have always been pretty terrible. But there are good mods to change the aerodynamics of the game and make it way more realistic.

Here's a couple of my designs:

Image
Dual Fuselage jet "Phoenix"

Image
Mig 17 clone the handles ridiculously well. I can get upwards of 10 G's with this in-atmosphere turning.

Image
VTOL jet I was telling you about. Hard to build cause the center of thrust has to match the center of gravity in VTOL mode, and not shift when fuel is consumed.

Image
This is actually a stock aircraft I turned into a biplane and strapped a ton of engines onto. "Albatross." It'll take off at about 30 m/s with all that surface area, but will reach upwards of 500 m/s.

And then there's candid moments with the rocketry side of things, like this:
Image
One of my first successful Mun returns.

All in all, I give the game a 13/10, and that's being conservative. I wish there were more planets at this point, but that's coming soon. It's still in Beta, and is easily my favorite game in my steam library.

My patience with MS Flight Simulator 2004 has finally paid off. Having add-on scenery and software, flight yoke, rudder pedals, etc. I refused to give up on it. After a ton of attempts using different configurations I had just about given up. Then last week a friend who works in a computer repair shop called me and said he had finally figured it out. Two days in the shop and now I'm resuming an "Around the World in a Cessna" jaunt that I had to suspend a few years ago. Now it's actually more enjoyable since it's on a 23" all-in-one with a faster processor than the old laptop I used to play it on.

Now if I could just get my old FS2000 to work in Windows 10 so I could fly the Concorde again.....

I was very fond of F16 game. Which is also a flight simulator game. It's a very old game. I started playing that game from a very early age. I didn't understand a single word they were saying. So, I always end up crashing the flight. Still I liked it. And one of the major reason behind it was it's tremendous soundtrack.

I saw the F16 game on store shelves but I've never seen it "in action". How did it compare to the Microsoft flight simulators? Graphics? Controls?

KSP is alot of fun. My roommates and I play it on-and-off on my projector and see who can come up with the craziest stuff and sit there for hours trying to get to different planets and moons. And now I realize how terrible that sounds....

I used to be fond of MS Flight Simulator, 98 being the first version when I was 10 and sold me on aviation. I do not have it yet, but I hear great things about X-Plane, which has great Linux support, which is almost all I use.

I had many of the early versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator (including version 1.00 of all things), but have not touched it in years!!

What is this "Steam" thing? Sounds like some kind of game environment that must be installed for the various games to run?

Steam is just a place to purchase games at a better price , but you can only access them on Steam, kind of like Origin. I have the Flight Simulator Gold with accelerator I bought a while back , but it won't work with Steam . kinda sucks as i don't want to buy it again. Microsoft Flight was a crock, you get the game for free, but had to buy locations or missions and planes. Xplane has 11 out in a demo and its ok. Now Kerbal is a kick if you can make a model that works, has lots of things available to use.
