FireNICO FAQ

Postby rich! » Tue Feb 03, 2009 12:10 pm

=====FireNICO FAQ=====

Changelog

A Javascript Error Pop-up displays when I'm viewing a Thread or Forum
(ie Error: document.getElementById("fv-header-favforum") is null)
Send me an IM or use the report bug feature located in the menu bar. Please report the exact error along with the click-thru sequence prior to the pop-up.

How do I Add a Favorite Forum to my Drop-Down?
When viewing a forum category page (ie, Computers) In the menu area on the top left. You'll see a  next to 'Favorite'. Just click the button and refresh the page.

How do I Add a Buddy to my Drop Down?
View a user profile and click on 'Add Buddy'

What is FN-QR?
When a user posts using the "FireNICO Quick Reply"

Lost Favorites Forums
Currently the favorite forums are stored in a cookie. Please check your internet/firewall/antivirus settings.

Slow Loading Thread Preview
Thread previewing parses the 'print' version of a thread. If a thread is over 100 pages, it may take some time for the content to load into the background of Firefox (it is cached for future use)

My IMs Now Open as a Full Size Window
A weird bug exists with Firefox 3.0 in which installing/updating an extension the windows will return to full size. Users have reported double clicking the title bar each time will return the window to normal size. Eventually Firefox will restore this behavior to normal. No known fix at this time.

I Killed-A-Thread and Now Can Not Find it
When you kill a thread, FireVortex will just hide the thread in the HTML. A toggle button will appear at the top menu area indicating a thread was hidden. Simply click the toggle button to view. You can click on the [+] link and the thread will no longer be killed.

I Killed Threads or Ignored Users and Now Only See 10 threads on a Page
FireVortex will just 'hide' a thread from view, it will NOT pull in additional threads to replace the hidden ones.

What is this My FireNICO Page?
This page will automatically aggregate RSS data from your favorite forums and watched topics. You can automatically reload feed by clicking on the tabs to keep up on current discussions.

What is the Shoutbox?
The shoutbox is a simple ajax chatroom which you can chat with other FireNICO users in real time. (no refreshing). I only ask to keep it clean (NC-17) but what happens here is OTR.

What are the limits on Killing threads, Buddies, Ignored Users, and such...
On the My FireNICO page, a Stats section will list the current limits.

How do I Change FireNICO Options?
In Firefox; Tools > Add-ons > Extensions > FireNICO: Click on Options.

I Changed an Option but nothing happened
'Save' the options page, and refresh the page.

I Made Changes to the Options or Killed a Thread, Added a Buddy, Ignored a Users but Everything Resets
Firefox will rollback changes if a crash occurs. If you exit Firefox properly, all changes made within FireNICO will be saved.

I just Installed/Upgraded FireNICO and no Watched Topics
FireNICO parses data every 30 minutes to an hour when you are currently browsing the forums. This data is stored in a cookie as well. (double check your browser/firewall/antivirus settings)

I don't see such and such emoticon
Some emoticons are hidden and only appear during certain months. I also try and add a few new ones for each release.

I use FireNICO at Home, Laptop and Work, Can I Sync my Data?
No, Data is stored local in the user.js file. Other extensions have the ability to sync multiple profiles.

How do I know what Version of FireNICO is Installed?
In Firefox; Tools > Add-ons > Extensions > FireNICO

When I use Google Image or Yahoo Image Search, FireNICO Menu Bar Displays
Greasemonkey compares the url location to invoke FireNICO. I have tried to block them out but a few may slip in here and there.

Is FireNICO Available for Other Browsers?
Currently testing for Webkit - . Sorry, No IE (ever)

"The Screen flash" using FireNICO
FireVortex runs internally on Greasemonkey. A drawback to this method is how Greasemonkey interacts with Firefox.

FN-QR

Postby rich! » Tue Feb 03, 2009 12:41 pm

Please report any bugs/feedback here... most of the stuff is a straight fork from FireVortex and what the members have requested over the years. I have no problems with tweaking stuff, I can be a little slow at times but generally try and honor whatever request there may be (if its possible)

Some bugs may exists... as I probably missed a bunch of stuff!

I do have some new features coming for FF3.1 as well. I'll stay active here (and not tempt myself with a 370Z :P )

---
Oh and IBT what the heck is "FN-QR". I'm not sure if it exists here but there is a back-end database bug with zeroforum on the vwvortex and blank titles when it comes to moderation of threads. This is just a simple fix for that but I'll add an option in the future to add your own or keep the default

Just out of curiosity, how does the whole "buddy list" and whatnot work. How do I go about adding a user to my buddy list?

//edit// Scratch that, I figured it out, its in the personal profile area. Cool.

FN-QR is what appears in the Re: line with the post date and time if you use the plug in Quick Reply. It should be the thread title or blank.

Also, all the picture icons next to the NICO settings on my bookmarks are changed to a purple vortex/black hole thing instead of the NICO red/blue parallel stripes. Please change back!

The hovering thing on the left side of the page is annoying and distracting. I wish there was a better place to put it.

I don't understand the highlighting function and it was also annoying, so I disabled the plug in. Sorry, but too many things about it that are just plain annoying to me.

Sorry to hear, definitely not for everyone but you can disable most of the options (90% of them on/off) As each one was requested in the past by members. Just about all options are enabled by default.

Tools > Add-ins > Extensions > FireNICO > "Options"

(sidebar can become a topbar - but in a future version an option to disable all together)

Ah the favicon, something I left out from the switchover. (as that is the symbol for the vwvortex but in red = fire)

The idea was able to find a friend on the forum to quickly IM but it will also highlight their posts if that option is enabled (within forum categories and within threads)

Never if that is the case There are too many unique instances when you are mucking around with rendered HTML and Greasemonkey (plus other oddball extensions that interfere - adblock sometimes, stylish, dom changes, etc... ) If the site admin or zeroforum make a small change in the html, it could break everything.

View a profile for the 'buddy thing'. (you can also ignore a user, which will "block" all threads and posts created by which you can quickly toggle on/off from view)

Favorites: View a main forum category, you'll see a button at the top row with a , just click it to add to the list. Then selecting the forum in the drop down will redirect you to that forum. also if you have the main page enabled, it will pull in the rss feeds of new posts for your favorites and watched topics. (fast way to keep track of new discussions)

I'll get some screenshots posted today some from the vwvortex
add buddy: http://media.firevortex.net/sc...5.gif

Thanks!

Well RSS (always been there) allows you keep track of threads/forums without email notifications. Personally, I use bloglines.com for all of my rss feeds. But if you do a google search for rss aggregators, you'll find plenty of examples (even a few firefox addons as well, my.yahoo, igoogle, etc...)
