I purchased a 2008 Rogue in Dec 2007. Because of the new CVT transmission, I purchased the Gold Extended Warranty. I think this extended the warranty for 7 years or 175,000 miles. Now I get a letter in the mail stating that Nissan will for free extend my warranty on the transmission for 10 years or 120,000 miles. Did anyone else buy this extended warranty? Do you think we should ask for our money back? To me it looks like those who did not purchase the extended warranty are the one's who made out here.

The letter you received only extends the warranty on the CVT. The Gold plan you purchased extends the warranty of just about everything else on the car past the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty. You did not get ripped off. You have an extended warranty on the whole car for 7/175,000 - CVT for 10/125,00.Those that didn't pay for the "gold" get 3 years/30,000 on the whole car and 10/125,000 on the CVT.If you want your money back, only the CVT wil be covered after the 3/30,000 warranty.

Yes we did.

I'm not asking for anything back since the extended CVT warranty doesn't cover all the items that our Nissan Gold extended warranty covers. Try referring to your extended warranty documentation and you'll see what your level of coverage offers.

Does anybody know for what years these extensions are for? I just purchased new '10 last month. I am not sure if these issues have since been resolved, or if this is something I need to pay attention to. I did not purchase any extended warranty.

Thanks,

Hey Dan,

I see you're a newer forum-goer and I'm not sure if we welcomed you, if not, welcome!! We're glad to have you here.

To answer your question, yes, you have the 10 year CVT warranty too, it comes with all new Nissan CVT's. Here is the direct quote from the Nissan USA web site:

"Every Nissan is backed by a 36-month/36,000-mile limited vehicle coverage and a 5-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain coverage. 2003-2010 Vehicles equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) also have a 10-year /120,000 mile CVT limited warranty extension. (For complete information, see your Nissan dealer and read the actual limited warranty.) For extra protection, you can also add Security+Plus®, the only extended service agreement approved by Nissan."

Now go out and enjoy that Rogue!

I believe my three years warranty is about to run out. The service department offered the Security+Plus for $2,000. What is the difference between Power train warranty and Security+Plus?

AznJohn22:

Have you read the brochures on Nissan's website regarding the extended service plans? It does a pretty good job explaining everything.

You can find them here:

Security Plus = pretty much everything

Power train = only CVT

Pretty much sums it up?

I read Power Train as covering the engine, transmission, and optionally the AWD system (if you buy the optional component coverage). The ECU, TCU and related sensors are not covered.

I need some thoughts and comments. In May, it will be three years for my car. Is it worth it to purchase extended warranty?

Some of us bought our extended warranty from Nissan of Santa Rosa, CA at a much better price than our dealerships offered it. You can buy your warranty from any Nissan Dealer and they do offer payment plans payable by credit card. Here is their link: http://nissansantarosaservicecontracts.com and the prices are cheaper. In July of 2009, I got the 72 month/100k Mile Gold Preferred Nissan warranty for $1539 spread over 17 months. I had an initial payment of 154.86 and then my monthly payment for 17 months was $81.42. It has been well worth it.

They may be able to wheel and deal if you work with them. Good luck!

holy smokes. you are right.
Rogue AWD Gold Preferred 96 Month 100,000 ...
$1,545.00

or 17 Monthly Payments @ 0% APR.: $81.79

10% Down Payment: $154.50

It seems like too good to be true. At the dealership, they were going to charged me $2,300 i believe.

I have yet to buy an extended warranty for any of my Nissan vehicles (I'm on Nissan #4). I have never had a breakdown/repair worth more than the extended warranty value. Knock on wood of course. I prefer to keep my money in my pocket earning interest instead of giving it to someone else for 3-5 yrs interest free and possibly never seeing it again.

Whether an extended warranty is worthwhile really depends on your comfort/risk level. I will say this though, the extended warranty business is huge... in the billions of dollars revenue wise. It's good business not only for automakers, but any retailer.

I really had a bad experience with an out of warranty Nissan Altima. I rather have a comfort level knowing my Rogue is covered under warranty. For $81 dollars a month, I'll go out to dinner less by two nights would make up the difference.

If it helps your peace of mind then it's worth it.

For me, it has the opposite effect, I just think of all the money I waste, especially during the early years of vehicle ownership when breakdowns are very unlikely and covered by the manufacturer warranty anyway. The fact that the dealer finance guys push these REALLY hard is a good indicator to me that this is a money-making strategy for the dealer, and like Phil said it's big business so I prefer to put the money into an investment for the 7 years rather than into the pockets of the warranty provider. So much of finances depends on time, and being without your cash for 7 years is precisely why it hurts you and why it profits the warranty provider.

AznJohn22,

In your case an extended warranty gives you piece of mind. It seems like a good option for you.

Absolutely, it totally depends on your preferences, and if that warranty lets you drive around relaxed and happy then you should totally get it. And financially you can look at it as security in the sense that you can budget a monthly payment (if you make payments on the cost of warranty) and don't have to worry about any unexpected surprise repair bills.

Whatever makes you comfortable is the way to go.

Making a significant home or customer electronics buy is definitely a big decision. Several retailers are getting into the extended warranty sport. Extended warranties are often expensive. Basically, the plans are insurance policies on your stuff. Most consumers are not aware that the credit cards they already have may provide free extended warranties. And this is now exactly what you need to extend the warranty without extending your wallet.
