It's not difficult, just time consuming. 10 steps to a big smile:

***SAFELY block your car up so you have at least 18" from ground to underside of body so you have room to work. I uesed 4 concrete blocks and some 2" x 10" wood and let the tires rest on them like it's parked. MAke sure park brake is on and wheels blocked so it won't roll off.

1. remove exhaust2. remove driveshaft3. remove starter4. remove transmission (top 2 center bolts require 3' socket extension and swivel joint)5. unplug o2 sensors6. remove EGR exhaust feed pipe (Loads of fun!) *Make sure you plug the hole where the pipe enters the EGR as it Cannot be reconnected to downpipes. Personally, now is the time to delete that worthless POS, but it is a bit of work to do it right.7. remove precat heat shields8. remove precats ( to DS nuts are a little tough to get to)9. buy new o2 sensors and install in Dp's10. install downpipes and reverse above procedure from 5 down to 1.

*Downpipes really do make the turbos respond a lot quicker.

Close, but the EGR is connected to the driverside exhaust manifold, not the precat or downpipe.

Agreed EGR is a whore for plenum pulling etc, and should be deleted for ease of working if nothing less. Provided you can still pass inspection.

It's not really that bad. You just need some serious patience, some long extensions, and a universal joint with the 14mm socket built in is a life saver.

I'd also suggest a second person, if only to help balance the transmission as you lower it on the jack. It's 75+lbs when full of fluid, so you don't wanna drop it on ya.

You may be able to get to the precats with the transmission in from above, but you have to pull the plenum, which can be an equal or greater whore.

Not too difficult, go to the tech pages and you'll find this link:

WOOPS thanks for the catch! my bad, it's goes to the turbo housing on a TT, and exhaust manifold on an N/A.

It's not a real tough job, just a bit time consuming. The most caution is to really soak the bolts/nuts with PB Blaster where the precats connect to the turbos. You don't want to break any of those. Also, like suggested, you need a helper to man-handle the transmission out and back in as it's a pretty heavy and awkward piece to handle on your back.If you decide to do it, there are lots of other pretty easy things to consider doing while it's out, like transmission and rear crank seals, and perhaps an upgraded clutch as you will no doubt want to do some more mods down the road once the bug bites you!

When you start getting closer to pulling it off, post for ideas on what all else to do.While the transmission is out, there are a lot of good mods and maintenance to do that cost almost nothing.
