Whats up people?? So my single cam is making noise, burning oil, misfiring and slow. Out with the old and new the new! So whats the plan? How about a VQ35DE from a G35, thats the plan. Ill try to document as much as I can. I'll be running full NATS, BCM, ETC. Wish me luck!

I want to see if the ECU will be mad at some little electrical thing and cause a code. I think I might be able to trick a couple sensors but wont full know until its installed, on paper it looks good.

Got your PM, your's won't accept a PM reply
A vq swap into an S13 is a LOT of fabricating
everything is very tight

Yes, I guess like a tiger
but also no room left over....
everything just barely fits in there,
and there is a ton of fabrication... in fact when I first saw the VQ35HR and took some
measurements,I didn't think it would fit, but I trusted my son (he read up on it)
and we pressed on

Sancosys, I remember you starting a thread last year about a friend bringing a VQ mounting kit to market. What happened to that? Any chance you'll be using that?

I think you're pretty knowledgeable on the subject, so I'm curious as to why it seems like the McKinney Motorsports kit is rarely (if ever) used. Is there something inherently wrong with it?

I checked out the McKinney kits...they look nice,($450) but they say they don't work for the VQ35HR
also don't know whether it has rubber isolation engine mounts or straight bolt-on...
that could be a little harsh
we had to relocate the steering column shaft closer to the frame rail to clear the
starter, which worked OK with the 350Z column...
Also, just having the mounts doesn't get you that far
You still need a header($900) or manifold($600) set that would work with their kit ...and
I'm not sure of the firewall clearance they give you, that might not allow
for the water hoses for the A/C and heater, mine were relocated to use 350Z heater core
in the dash with different holes cut in the firewall and that was very tight...
I don't know if that mount can clear a stock hood(ours did fit after trimming out some cross bracing)
you need a shorter shifter housing/mount($250)
that adds up to a lot of money...spent on things we could fab ourselves
and spend the money on other things

I was more wondering if there was something wrong with their kit fitment-wise like the VQswap.com kit a few years back. McKinney has a great rep, since they were the ones to pioneer the RB swap, but it seems like their VQ kit is taking a while to catch on for some reason...

I could be wrong but VQ swaps can cost more compared to other engines.

Picked up the motor and trans today, I'll post pictures when its not 1:48

Hey sancosys,
Just thinking about some stuff with your swap...
we read the stuff on the posts about shortening the shifter
linkage...it basically had you cut out all of the "round shaft" section
of the shifter linkage and then weld them together back to back... we tried that
first, but being so short made the shifter knob kinda twist unaturally in
your hands as you shifted... we ended up adding back about 1" of round
shaft and that really made a HUGE difference with the shifter feel....
of course it moved things a bit in our mock up
I'm guessing you have the same 6 speed transmission, don't kow if
it will be an issue with your set up or not

you've probably seen this, but if you haven't, this is the shifter link
it shows them welded back to back

Thanks!

I have seen that but its been awhile. I'll be pulling my engine this week and cleaning/painting the bay while I collect a few more parts.

Are you using the check engine light, if so do you have any codes?

I used the entire Z wiring harness and Z dash, steering wheel and gauges...
I think on mine it is a service engine soon light...
that should all work on my set up...only things I didn't swap were
airbags,VDC, and antiskid...I've got to sort those lights out for slip'
VDC,antiskid yet. I kept the OBD stuff and haven't ckd codes if any, yet

The motor is in and fits pretty well. Need to figure a few things out, at the moment my main concern is moving the brake and fuel line on the passenger side. It will be very close to the exhaust. Any suggestions? I will post some pictures up soon.

I kept the fuel and brake lines on the passenger side as it was, except
I moved the fuel line a little closer to the firewall. Since I made my header
shorter, and angled it down a little quicker, it missed the firewall by a
good margin. I also added a fiberglass type heat shielding around the brake and
fuel lines ( a sleeve slipped over the end and down around the bend to the rear
of the car). After that I fabricated an aluminum heat shroud channel that covered it as well,
that is bolted to the firewall

Its been going good, finished painting the bay yesterday. The final color is a little lighter than the primer but in gloss, something that I thought would match a lot of body colors. Going to collect a few more parts today and the motor and trans goes back in Thursday. I couldn't decided what I wanted to do with the factory 240sx body harness but made the decision to make a smaller, lighter, functional harness.

Any updates?
Also, you got your engine in, you didn't say what mounts you used
any problems with steering shaft clearance?
sway bar clearance?

I post this on someone else thread also but I am trying to get the pin outs to power my BCM, also when the BCM is plugged in and powered (at least I think) I can not use my scan tool but if I remove the BCM pin to the DLC it works. Anyone we be appreciated.
