DATSUN/NISSAN TRUCK VIN NUMBER DECODER (1980-1986)

There ought to be a page devoted to the decoding of a Datsun/Nissan pick-up VIN system used for the 1980-1986 models. This work I've done so far is not complete.

The general truck make was changed from Datsun to Nissan during the 1983 model year (thus, all "Nissan" pickups sold in the U.S. are marketed as "1983-1/2" models to distinguish them from the "early 1983" Datsuns); production of the 1983-1/2's started roughly November 1982 in Japan, while U.S. production started at the Smyrna, TN plant in June 1983.

This information I was able to find elsewhere but doesn't help me. My "vin" number as posted on the (p door jam tin plate for my 1980 Datsun 720 reads HGY 720 (that part is silk screened on the plate) followed by a stamped 6 digit number. The old owner can give e a bill of sale but has no plates for the truck. This doesn't meet present 'vin' requirements of 17 digits and I can't find any corresponding descriptions of the vin numbers for this particular pattern. Interestingly the engine wall plate is so corroded it is very hard to read and has become detached from the wall (plastic 'buttons' broke off). I have the plate however, and though very hard to decipher, it matches the one on the door jam. I'm not sure how hard this is going to be to register since this vin number (12 digits) probably won't work in the modern systems computer searches. What do you think??

This guide is incorrect/incomplete

The 17 digit vin code system wasn't put into place till 1981... while it's not absolute, this mean many 1981 model cars, produced in 1980, still adhere to old standards for each individual manufacturer... 1980 year models DEFINITELY don't adhere to the 17 digit code system...

So this guide should not include the 1980 or 1981 model years for the 720 Datsun/Nissan pickup truck.

Does anyone know if there is any guide covering all older datsun models? Doubt there is much info, if any, other than the model "720" n probably the production line number...

Hi, I joined the forum a few months ago, I have a 1984 Sunrader fiberglass RV built on an '84 720 Cab and Chassis, with factory dually rear wheels. I was decoding my VIN, and noticed some additional information you could map into your really excellent Datsun/Nissan 720 Decoder Guide.

In Part 5, Body Type, my VIN contains 5, which I believe to indicate Cab and Chassis

In Part 6, Miscellaneous, my VIN contains H, which I believe indicates 2WD dual rear wheels

I don't believe there was a 4x4 dual rear wheel option. The rest of my VIN decodes correctly with your documentation.

I have a 1982 280ZX 2+2 with the same problem and have been trying to decipher the vin number HGS130-211559 to find out where made etc. Also it took a long time to convince insurance companies why I didn't have the 17 digit code and even now when I want to change companies same problem over again. Can anyone help me with this vin number.
