Hello,

Im hoping someone can help me out on this one since Im new to the car thing. I have a 97 Infinit I30..I went to get brakes the other day and they informed me that I need two CV Joints (not sure what it is,hope Im saying it right). I know it has something to do with the Axle, they said the boot was broken and its beyond getting a new boot. Anyways they quoted me well over $1000 to get this fixed. Does that seem like the right amount?? More importantly I dont have that kind of cash just lying around so I need to save it up, does anyone know how long on average I can go before it absolutely has to be fixed. It isnt making noise yet they said the problem just started.

Sorry if i sound ignorant on the subject, truth is I am Any info or light you guys can shed on the subject will help me out alot!!

The problem is that when the boot gets torn; it slings all the grease out of the boot, and lets water and other contaminants into the joint.

Don't bother just replacing the CV joints, get new axles. 2 axles from somewhere like pepboys will cost you about $60 a piece (for remanufactured axles).

It is possible to do it yourself, but the main obstacle will be getting the axle nut off as it is torqued up to 231 ft/lbs. If you have access to an impact wrench, this won't be a problem.

You can go for a while with the torn boots, but as with most things on a car...the sooner you get it replaced, the better. It all really depends on how hard/far you drive the car as to how long they will last. I would say you should be ok for a month at least.

So if you don't feel comfortable replacing them yourself; call around to a few repair shops in your area and get quotes on replacing both front axles, and go from there.

And welcome to NICO!

Thanks so much for your reply, it really helps and I will take your advice.

So may I ask, whats the difference between CV Joints and Axles?? are they one in the same and if I replace the axles will that mean I wont need cv joints??

Now I can at least sound like I know what Im talking about...lol

CV (constant velocity) joints are what allow the axle to rotate while you turn the steering wheel. Best I can explain it is that it's a splined (verticle threads) collar suspended by 6 or so ball bearings in a larger cap.

Here are a couple generic pictures of a CV joint.

CV boots wear pretty quickly on maximas/I30s. A new remained axel cost me $45 through a friends shop. The passenger side is a little tougher of the axel is rusted to the bracket. I did the passenger side on my maxima in a little over 2 hours. I figure both sides shouldn't take more than 4 hours. If they are using OEM parts I believe the axels are a few hundred a piece.

They don't wear any worse than any other cars. I went through 2 sets in my old Probe within 125k miles (within a 8 year timeframe). Rubber dries out and rots from time to time...

my boots have been gone for quite some time, and my cv joints have been making noise for many months. This is one of those things that could go tommorrow, or you may have some time to figure out what you can do. I'm betting you have a while.

Personally, I'd prefer to solve the problem instead of having a chance of being stranded on the side of the road..

I do. In fact, when I get a scratch on one of my rims, I replace them all.

sarcasm..., nice. no really dude the last few months have been really tight, barely enough for bills and food since my paycheck was the only one coming in. I was only sympathizing with this guy's possible money situation. I'm not stupid. Give me a break

yeah our precious cars could be in ten feet of water right now. seriously though, I can't imagine my family going through that. I have a 6 month old daughter and its gut wrenching when she has an earache, so I can't imagine how some of these families must feel

So I called around and the cheapest to do it is $324 including remanufactured parts....Which was way cheaper than one shop that quoted me over a $1000!!! So maxima278 you said yours have been making noise for months??? I can say I have only heard it for the past three weeks so even though thats a better price money is still low in my single parent household so I may have to wait....and Im a girl so I swear that one shop tried to rip me off since I didnt know what the heck they were talking about...You guys helped me out with the info and its appreciated!!

Good for you. $324 sounds a lot more reasonable.

Is that for both sides? I'd pay that in a second. If you do decide to wait, I would suggest you have a plan in case you do get stranded. Make sure you have a cell phone. Especially since you are a girl. I think you will be fine until you can afford to fix it, just watch for the noise worsening, ok?
