The passenger side CV joint is leaking. I went under the car and noticed that the rubber was ripped in the middle. Is this hard to replace? and if its possible can someone point me a site where to order the part.

CV boots are not fun to replace. I would also just buy a half shaft or have a shop put in a new one, which comes already made up with new boots. I have had new boots installed on old shafts with broken boots and had joint failure down the road. If all the grease is out of the boot you have probably done damage to the CV joint. I do alot of mechanical work myself but this is a job I don't wont to tackle. Who knows it might be easy but I leave it up to my mechanic for this job. Cost is usally around $250.00 per half shaft installed parts and labor.

You want to buy the complete halfshaft assembly to install. Nissan OEM isexpensive but Autozone, Oreilly's etc are about 1/2 of that price.

Unless you are a experienced mechanic with a lot of tools anda good shop you will be unable to change out the just the bootand bearings.

You also want to change out the seal going into the transmissiontoo. A friend needs to hold the shaft while you put on the brakecaliper, put on the large nut etc so the seal doesnt get warped during reassembly.

Now is also a good time to check the power stearing since the shaft is out of the way and look for other problems. If you neednew brakes put them on now since you have the wheel and caliperoff.

I checked http://www.rockauto.com/ for halfshaft and I do not know which one to order. There are too many and i do not know if my model is a gle or a gxe. My car has a spoiler and no sunroof. and the one thats leaking is on the passenger side.

do you have at or mt? for at i'm guessing this one: Part Image$51.79 $0.00 $51.79 Add to CartCARDONE SELECT Part # 666150 More InfoFront Left; w/o Locking Differential

and it shouldn't matter if you have the gx or gl because the tranny is the same so the cv's are the same.

you don't have LSD/locking diff b/c only the 20th Anniversary Maximas(2001) has that.

i'm doing my axles. HOW do you get out the original axle seal? should i just pry it out with a screwdriver covered with a rag?

I just got done replacing my CV joints. They are pretty easy to do. When i pulled mine out all I did was just take a sharp flathead to it. and then once I got it moving I have a small crow bar and leveraged it against the tranny. It is not that hard. I got the both of mine done in 1.5 hours that is, because I had to run to advance to get a loaner socket to get that huge nut off so that they rotor and all can be pulled off. Overall it is pretty easy

Funny it was rack and pinion bellow not the cv joint and the leak was coming from else where.
