Moderators, feel free to move to A/V. I posted here because I felt this was Coupe specific.

As we all know, trunk space in the Coupe is a major headache. I purchased the Zenclosure sub box a few months back and have yet to install it (or the rest of my equipment for that matter) because I did not know where I wanted to mount my amps, distribution blocks, and cap. I need a functional trunk and also didnt want to nix the spare and dig into that well. Mounting on the back of the seats would defeat the purpose of the Zenclosure box and I didnt think my amps would fit underneath the front seats.

My solution? Convert the 40 split rear seat into a custom mount location. I never have anyone sitting back there and it will leave my trunk, as well as the 60/40 fold completely functional. A little easy woodwork and some basic upholstery should get the job done. Here is a pic of my progress so far, Im going to keep updating as I go. Right now just have the backseat gutted, the wood cut for the new mount insert, and the lower arm from the stock seatback switched over to the new wood mount insert.

Image

If anyone else would like to do the same kind of install let me know and I can take exact measurements for you. Im planning to use quite a bit of foam to fill in gaps making the new insert look a little more seat-like, not sure what I want to do for fabric yet. It would be nice to be able to match the stock color, but probably wont be an easy task. Was possibly thinking of stripping the fabric off of the stock seat but then that leaves me SOL if I ever want to sell the car.

Cannot wait to get this done...stay tuned.

You could always go to a junk yard and find a car that got totaled and tear its seat up.

Yup possibility for sure. I think that might get me into trouble though, will want to take too many parts for other mods!

The risk was the possibility of removing the fabric from your seat. Im not saying I dont like the idea, just that it is a risk. ;)

Awesome idea!

I would def check out a junk yard for the fabric.

What amp do you have?

I have a 1000watt Alpine mono hidden under the carpet in the trunk. Had to cut some foam to make that fits. Only problem is that it over heats down there :( so this would be an awesome solution.

I have an old Sony Xplod which is going to push my subs until it dies, then going to upgrade to a Kicker ZX series to match my 4 channel for my components. These are even old model amps but I love them, very versatile.

This is the 4 channel I have.

This is the old sony Xplod. No comments please, this is the first amp I ever bought and its still kicking! Almost 10 years old!

Another reason I didnt want to put them down there. I also like to be able to get at my settings quite often so tearing the trunk apart every time I wanted to tune something was not an option. If you want to give it a go, I'll get some measurements for you.

No cant make Carlisle, wish I could though. I will definitely have to make time to get to at least 1 NE meet this summer.

I think flush is going to be the hardest part. The stock seats are actually curved a little bit at the top in back, Im hoping I can just get the wood to sit straight and then plush it up with some foam under whatever fabric I get my hands on.

UPDATE:

Put this project on hold for a little because Im completely updating my system. I work part time at Best Buy and we just got an insane accomodation with Kicker because we just started carrying their line (by insane Im talking 70-80% off MSRP and free shipping). So I bought 2 new amps, new 6" coax door speakers, and new 6" x 9" 3-way rear deck speakers. Placed the order Tuesday but they are out of stock of the speakers and said to allow 4-6 weeks for delivery of items IN stock. I have measurements of the amps but want them in front of me to get everything right.

Looks like I have some time to find my fabric.

CHRISTMAS IN MAY!

The accommodation website said 4-6 weeks...I got everything except my 6" x 9" rear deck speakers in 1 week, the 6" x 9" are on backorder but so were the 6" coax supposedly. MSRP for everything I bought is $1,296, I paid $396 with free shipping. Also think I can get the stock fabric from nissanparts2u.com for about $70.00 so I might do that, couldnt find it in a junk yard. Going to start laying out the amps, cap, and D blocks this weekend, hoping to have the custom mount done in 2 weeks.

So I finally have some time this weekend to get going on this project. Test fitted the wooden mount this AM...

Image

...and it was damn near perfect. And thanks to SRWong I was able to find some fabric last night that is almost identical to the stock color. It actually would be but my stock fabric is sun bleached so its a little bit lighter than what I bought. Going to lay out the amps and distribution blocks this AM, go to work, then make some cuts to pass wires through and such when I get home later. Hopefully upholster tomorrow and have everything at least mounted in the car by tomorrow night.

Oh almost forgot...I didnt have room to mount my capacitor on the wood, amps are just too large. Sooooooo...it going in the cupholder. :yesnod

oh- and a cap in ur cupholder- thats a fantastic idea hahaha :)

i cant wait to c the finished project.

plus- on a side note- im planning on taking my sub out of my trunk altogether and doing something similar to this but with the sub down in the footwell and allowing full trunk access. i've been having to do a whole lotta stuff for work and such and ive been getting creative with packing the coupe lol

on a side note- ive been able to fit 8 tires INSIDE the car LAWL (with rims attatched)

nuff' said. kthx lol

Also crossed my mind, but Im a big dude and didnt think it would allow me to put the driver seat where I wanted/needed.

Fits perfectly, getting it mounted properly might be a little tricky but Im doing it, I dont give a F! So I will have 1 cupholder and 1 CAPholder in my rear seat.

yeah bro- verbage is just a slang form of verbiage which is the correct spelling, and pronunciation- ver be age = verbiage. it's usually on accident to say verbage but others just dont know the diff. lol

im 6'2'' and i totally understand the size thing. the box im doin w/ is angled so im thinking it should fit with the cushion of the rear of the driverseat and not be higher than the rear seat bottom. mathematically, it should all work out. physically and practically, im not so sure lol-

anywho- im excited to c this lol :)

Foam laid out and stapled...

Im about 90% done with the upholstery, corners are giving me a huge headache, cant get them to lay right. Off to get my wheels balanced so I have a much needed break.

Semi finished product, no end caps on the amps, need to tweak the fabric a little in between the distribution blocks and test fit it again in the car. Apologies for the terrible cell phone pics, the woman is out of town with the digi.

OK so a few things are clearly obvious...

I should have used thicker foam, far from looking flush to the other seat.
I blew a measurement at the top and the whole thing fell way short of looking flush height wise.
My upholstery skills are subpar.

Image

I mean its not terrible, and most of the issues can be addressed and fixed, just didnt turn out the way I envisioned it. More pics to come after I do some fine tuning and get the good camera back.

Here are some more pics with the digi camera.

These are pics of what I had to do to solve a problem with a gap at the top of the seat. I knew it was going to be there but didnt think it would be this bad. Made another small upholstered insert. Pics are from outside looking in so my bad for quality.

Without insert, staples showing, huge gap.

With insert, also a front view.

All in all Im happy with how it turned out. I made a small mistake with the upholstery at the top, its not even all the way across but that extra insert takes the eye away from it and I think I can fix it with a few more staples. Also the fabric around the D blocks is a little funky, hoping that will straighten out once I throw some wiring in.

SICK!!! :dblthumb:

Its too visible and i'd be nervous about someone breaking into my car and leaving not only with the amps but with half of the seat lol.
