I just picked up a 2012 M37S over the weekend and have been loving every bit of it so far! The mod bug has bit me early and would love to put a drop on it soon. I know any sort of drop will change ride quality, but what is the best option/route to take if i want a subtle drop to eliminate some wheel gap but without having to compromise ride quality?
Ride quality is such a subjective concept that it is difficult to give objective data. Having said that I will try to offer my humble opinion; and that is whenever lowering a car I will forever use coilovers or air for the right application.
Though most lowering springs do not have greatly increased spring rates over stock, there is always an increase or at least an increase in the progression of the rate. It has been my experience that sharp edged bumps are the bane of lowering springs; there is simply not enough high speed stock damping to compensate for the additional spring rate in such short and sharp compressions, thus degrading the ride quality. This may have changed since I last used lowering springs or in the specific case of springs on your M so I cannot offer specific knowledge here, only past experience. On the other hand, coilovers with quality dampers and not incredibly stiff spring rates, IMO, are able to more closely replicate the stock ride while simply turning the firmness up all around.
Lest we forget that with coilovers you are also able to adjust the ride height, spring preload, and damping allowing for you to more closely dial in the ride and stance to your taste.
Just my $.02.
