P0420 and P0430 are catalytic converter below efficiency codes. Run a 20oz. bottle of Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner through a full tank of gas to see if that will help the codes. Also, replace the fuel filter after doing so. P0461 is a fuel level sensor code. Techron may clear it up as well.

P1130 is for the swirl control solenoid valve. Ensure the hose leading to it is not clogged with carbon; see page EC-515 of the factory service manual for its location.

P1491 is for the vacuum cut valve bypass valve. Inspect all hoses leading to and from the charcoal canister (it's under the driver's side rear of the vehicle) it for clogging or damage.

P0102 is a MAF sensor code. Clean it using MAF cleaner spray only. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before disconnecting its harness.

I would like to say something about the P1491 code. I kept getting it, and so I replaced the solenoid and bypass valve, as well as the solenoid on the canister, but in was still getting the code after a few days. I asked the dealer, and they said that the emissions is somewhat connected to the cruise control (maybe by vacuum...not sure). Since I purchase dot he 02 QX4 a couple months ago, the cruise control did not work. Anyway, the dealer said to fix the cruise would be $2500 for the laser. I, instead, took the laser off myself to take it apart and try to fix it myself. The P1491 immediately came on, and everytime I reset the codes, it came back. The code seemed to come on when I filled the gas, or when it rained or had bad weather. Anyway, I took the laser apart to find most of the board components were rusted off, and were bouncing around inside the laser box. I cleaned it out, cleaned the inside of the box with carb cleaner, and revealed the box with silicone so no more moisture would get in. I replied it in, reset the codes, unplugged the battery for a couple hours, and reconnected the battery. It's been three weeks, and no problems at all. I hope this helps someone who has done everything to try to fix the emissions issue, only to be stuck with the P1491 code.

Hello all. I would like to say something. I can do some pretty good things, but I can also do some dumb things. It turns out that the light came on again, and it turns out that I put the Vacuum cut bypass valve (plastic part) upside down. I did put it in exactly as it was originally, but the light came on when I bought the car so whoever had it before me put it in upside down, and I just copied it without knowing. I read about it in an earlier post, and it took me checking the whole system, and finally turning it the 'right side up', and like magic, the light has been off for months now :-) Thanks for all the help by the way.

And by the way; If you live in the Chicagoland area, don't take your QX4 to the dealer in Hoffman Estates as they couldn't find the problem that the Vacuum bypass was upsidedown, and I took it to them a few times!!!

Dear All,
My Pathfinder has been giving more problems. It now smokes badly from the exhaust, with oil and water coming from the exhaust. My local mechanic said I must change the engine. It seems I have bought a lemon car.Too bad.

When you say it started smoking.. is that after you did something like add fuel system cleaner or some other kind of work?

Water coming out is not a replace engine issue unless you have coolant coming out.

If the mechanic did not perform a compression test before telling you to replace a smoking engine then I suggest you get a second opinion, but
