okay well, let's start off by saying i'm an idiot

i've been having too much fun with manumatic past 24hours

about 20 minutes ago, i redlined while in 1st gear and now there is a clicking noise coming from under the hood, gets louder when i accelerate and dies down less i push the gas

literally didn't notice any thing different as far as the drive/performance, just the new very noticable noise

i'm scared s***-less to go out and start the car and see if it's still there lmao :(

any 1st impression thoughts?

I did something similar in my M45 a couple of months back. Might have been October. Anyways, same scenario as you: HARD acceleration in 1st to redline, then some constant ticking. The ticking was loud and seemed like it was coming from the drivers side front wheel area alot. I drove it back home which took me 5 mins and the sound went away. It hasnt come back and I dont see any noticable change. I've taken it to Infiniti for a couple of oil changes and they told me they didnt find anything.

Tl;dr: I had the same issue under the same circumstance. The sound went away the same day and I dont know what it was.

thanks for quick response bro!

you gave me the courage to go back out and start the car, but the noise was still there :(

kind of hard to make out, but here are some vids with the sound

now just imagine the clicking kind of get faster as i accelerate, i noticed in gear 3 it was harder to make out the sound, haven't tried 4th or 5th yet

I just checked out your videos. That is the exact same sound mine had. Like I said, mine went away shortly after i stopped the car and parked it in the garage to inspect. I turned off the car and it went away when I turned on the car. In your case, you might want to start taking off all of the plastic pieces and see if you can isolate the sound to a particular part of the engine bay and use a long screw driver as a stethoscope type deal. Put the tip of the screwdriver on parts of the engine and put your ear on the handle. You will use this to find out what and where the sound is coming from and perhaps that can help you in your investigation.

You don't really have to use a long screw driver but something similar that can be used in the same fashion.

Check your oil level when its cooled off, top off if needed. How long did you hold 1st gear while red lining?

I would start with the belts/ pulleys tensioner, sounds like it could be coming from there. Obviously oil level fluids etc. inspect for leaking... I once had a very similar sound on my V6 which I could duplicate-turned out to be bad rod bearing on belt tensioner. Anyways with your engine running /idling take a spray bottle with clean water make it tight so its just a light mist and spray a little on beltand pulleys if noise goes away you found your problem.

Over revving is bad for valves. Could be lifter noise or the valves themselves.

thanks for all the replies, i f*** love you guys

i took her into the Sears Auto Center

for an under the hood check

and the guy told me it could be anything and pretty much told me to go to a shop that offers a full inspection which they didn't, he did say it was an internal engine sound and that it could be a valve like you said altM35

weird part is the noise is almost gone now, this is what it sounds like with the hood up, i can't hear it with the hood down

i know for a fact my oil is low, but not completely dried out empty, could topping it off alone fix the remaining sound?

It might not fix it by topping off but being low on oil and hauling a** is not good at all. I'd put some in regardless any time it's low and check it often not at the oil change interval.

I agree with Mex. If it's a valve, and I believe our valves are hydraulically controlled (oil pressure) then correcting the oil level will help to build proper pressure and flow.

If you can, record a video from under the engine. Perhaps hold your camera at arm's length while laying on the ground. If the noise is significantly quieter, this is a good sign that the issue is not "bottom end" (like a rod). If it is louder from down below, then it might be rod knock (I hope not) or a leaky exhaust manifold/gasket (doesn't sound like it, but easier to fix than rod knock).

Good luck!

The VQ35DE engines have VVT and although I am not certain if the 4.5l has VVT as well but could it be that the Valve springs are not strong enough and the lifters are getting stuck?

I get a tick whenever my oil is low and the motor gets hot. I always top off between oil changes and it fixes the problem. Worth a shot.

i emailed the dealership to ask what oil they had used on the last change, so i could just top it off or put a bottle full in without having to drain out what's currently inside

he came back with this

pennzoil gold synthetic blend 5w-30

your guys' thoughts on this?

should i have it drained and put in full synthetic or is this hybrid blend okay?

If its in there now just add some to the full line. If you decide to go full synthetic later just do it at the next oil change

yeah he's not even a 100% though, he said this is what would have been used in an "infinity m45" lol... it was a ferrari dealership

i'll just do a clean change with draining, unless you guys think that blend s*** is okay

The dealership has never put on the receipt the brand and type of oil whenever I went. I have asked before though and got an answer, but never have I seen it on the receipt.

Strange because at my dealer they put that it was synthetic, showed the price per qt and when I did the transmission fluid showed the details for that too.

If you haven't changed the oil since November, I'm fairly confident that a change will fix your noise.

Go with Mobil 1.... Also, from the pix above, was that the oil filter used in your car? I'd verify if its the correct part... Just to be safe. I would also invest in the Mobil 1 oil filter if going full synth.... Keep her safe buddy

In general, it is not an issue to mix oils - even synthetic with dino would be okay.

Of course, I would not make a practice of this per se, but adding in another bottle of something good will not hurt anything.

Again, in general, as long as it is a good reputable brand, then it is not an issue ... as long as the oil change interval is not too long. And, Pennzoil is a good brand.

FWIW, I use Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-40, but I would be just as fine with a good dino oil (like Castrol GTX, Quaker State, Pennzoil, etc.) of the correct weight 5W-30, and would not have qualms about it.

My oil (and filter) change interval is set at 3750 miles as a "halfway" point between regular 7500 mile checks - just for convenience.

Your not an idiot! I have heard that sound from my M many times. It's usually low on oil. When winding these bad boys out the also tend to "pump up" the lifters. Usually a little rest will drain them down.
These are some dang weird engines. If I run mine at high RPM's I get the same sound at next start up. I have even found if parked on a non-level surface it will do the same thing. I gave up trying to figure it out. My advice is get off the garbage syn oil and go back to dino oil like 10w40. I know I will get beat up for saying that, but my M eats syn oil for breakfast. I carry a few quarts of good dino oil when I travel at high speeds.

My thinking is the same. :yesnod

Let the car sit overnight on level ground, check the oil level in the morning, and if low, fill it back up to the mid-point (or even near the high mark).

Well ... please never let it get that low!

I check my car every 500 miles to make sure that oil level is good ... only takes 30 seconds in the morning.

they literally told me they heard nothing, and that absolutely nothing was wrong with the engine... maybe it's in my head now, but i felt like i could still hear it when accelerating a bit, like in the updated video... so i showed them the original video, he called in the head mechanic and the guy said right off the bat that it was a valve knock, and that it should be okay now and to not do it again lmao

inb4 my engine blows up

in other news they told me my rear shocks were leaking and quoted me $1000 for parts and labor!

thanks all for all the help

Same here, when I went to get my oil change a few days after that incident, I was very paranoid thinking any little sound was from that engine bay (Drove around a lot with my radio turned off). I got over it (mentally) a week or two later.

Wow!! $1000 for rear shocks...? Another option is to put on KYBs on all four and it'll be under 500 for parts.... I have the KYBs sports (G exel ??) and they do just fine!!!!
