"Service engine soon' light came on my 2006 Infiniti G35 Coupe. Dealer checked it out and said it's the driver's side catalytic converter. Estimate was $1600 to replace it. I know they're expensive but that floored me.
:bang
First of all, has anyone had this happen?
Second, is there a less expensive alternative?
has anyone her done away with theirs, is it legal and are there any other adjustments that are needed without it?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I'm checking to verify it but I believe in Kentucky i'll be okay to remove them. I do, however, have another question.
If I do remove them both is there anything else that needs to be done to insure the car runs properly without them?

The catalytic converter's only purpose is to assist a chemical reaction involving cleaning up the emissions from the engine. Other than a slight increase in exhaust flow because its gone, there should be no other effects. Be advised that it could be a problem on resale or required emission inspections where ever the car is registered. Don't throw them away, you may need them later and they are NOT cheap.

That's what I need to know. Yes, I'm aware that they're expensive.
Thanks!

You should be able to get a catalytic converter for your car for less than $500 and a muffler shop should put it on for less than $100.

You could install High Flow CAT's. Even without a tune, you would gain a few HP.
They are about $538 at stillen.com
Also, conceptzperformance.com has AAM and Berk HFC's for $400-$500
These will increase the noise level a little, but not too much.
They are a bit of a pain to install, but any good shop should be able to do it for around $100

Cat-Back means it installs after the catalytic converter so this won't cure the problem.

Yes, cat-back doesn't replace the converters.

You can purchase after-market converters for almost half the price of OEM. You need converters for the DE motor. We carry them on our website.
Just type in the search bar, HFC and it will return the ones we carry.
