This 1991 Hatchback came into my possession in late November of 2010. A rust free running chassis with a price tag of $800 fit the bill, and the build was started. The plan; a mild, budget build for under $3500.
Image
Image

After the chassis was towed to my house I couldn't help a test drive. On went the dealer plates, and I left smiling down the driveway. The pre-installed electric fans seemed to keep the engine cool, and the headers gave the exhaust a nice tone. Becoming more confident in my purchase I ventured out of my neighborhood. This would be the last time it moved under its own power. Shortly after exiting; the bottom end locked up solid. Luckily the roll back was still at home, and it was towed back to the shop. The build just took on a new direction. That night, out came the engine.
Image

The next day a search for a KA24E bottom end began. A 35,000 mile engine was sourced from a local salvage yard for $250 and brought back to the shop. Both engines were completely disassembled and labeled. The KA24DE crank was scored from a spun bearing, so it and the head were sent out for machining. A mold port and polish was performed on the head, and a complete engine gasket kit, timing kit, and new bottom end bearings were ordered. Next a KA24DE exhaust cam, Q45 TPS, and Q45 Injectors were scavenged from a junk yard. Everything began falling together for a high compression N/A KA24DE build. When the engine is finished being assembled a custom intake manifold will be mated to free up airflow on the intake side of things, and a full 3” catback will be fitted to improve flow out. The power from the engine will be transferred to the rear wheels through a spec stage 3 clutch.

With the engine removed the chassis was transported to Carriage Auto Center in Binghamton NY, where the car could be prepped for paint. Step 1: Gut the car. The interior, windshield, and side glass were removed all removed. Step 2:Bust out the Saws-All. A cut was made cross the roof, and the c-pillars were notched to allow flex. The c-pillars were then pushed down, and tack welded to the seat brackets. The rear section of a Toyota pickup truck was sourced for the sliding glass window, and panels were fabricated to join the window and chassis as one. A Chevrolet Colorado bed was sacrificed to finish off the cargo area of the s-chassis. A knock off GP style kit was force mated with a pig nose front bumper, and the rear of the kit was also cut and bonded to the stock urethane rear bumper. This allowed for more proper fitment. When the final body work is done it will all be sprayed a bright white.

The interior will be sprayed a battle ship grey which will be nicely offset by the stock black paneling cut to fit in the new cabin space. I will be held in place by a set of knockoff recaro reclining racing seats. To compliment the interior will be a custom Coors Light hydraulic handbrake that will allow immediate lockup of the rear wheels.
Image

The car is made lower to the ground by a set of E-motoring coilovers, and 16x8.25 0et XXR 527’s will fill in the wheel wells. For drift wheels a few pair of 15x11 -13 steel wheels have been fabricated, and the rear end has been welded solid for consistency.

When all is said and done, thanks to the help of some friends, as well as a lot of my own personal work the car will be well within budget. More pictures will be added as the build continues. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

I was really unsure if I would see something I liked when I clicked in here, but great job so far. I love those wheels. Where did you get them? Everything looks like its comming along nicely. I like these sil-truck guys, but, IMO they look better with Silvia fronts. But it all looks good. : )

I liked the way you did the rear conversion. Are you gonna cage it at all back there?

Very nice to see a "240 truck" . Yes, the Silvia front end on these are sweet when converted to a truck only IMO2 . There was one here in Austin that a neighbor around the way did a few years ago. Only reason why is because the hatch was completely rusted. Yours is looking a lot better though. Some people wanted me to do mine. I want to but probably not with this car.

You going to use steel tubing+ weld/cage for the back window part? Good luck man.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I deff agree they look better with a silvia front, but to stay in budget this works for now. I picked the complete kit up for $200 with full intentions of destroying it since it will be a daily drifter. I will probably do a front cage (roll bar and door bars) this summer.

The wheels are widened steel wheels. Im planning on writing a how to this evening and i'll post a link to it in here when I am finished.

Cool. I was referring to the back part where you cut out as a window. The sides seemed to sag a little bit with the 240 truck that was built here. He braced them up with steel tubing and welded it inside the cabin in the rear of the seats. You might want to consider before driving to prevent it flexing. On top of that remember that you have taken off about 100+ lbs off the car lol. It is gonna get sideways like a mofo. :gapteeth:

Cool project, excited to see how it turns out. I'm with everyone else though, even though I'm not a fan of the sil front, for the "truck" application it looks better. But you'll get there I'm sure. Those wheels with the massively stretched tires are God-awful hideous though. And PLEASE for the love of God cut it out with the whole passive-voice-story-of-my-build writing style, just because super street does it doesn't make it cool or edgy. It's very annoying to read, just talk normal man! lol

i'll post some updates tonight. not a lot has changed. did some more body work and started assembling the engine. attention has shifted towards quicker projects momentarily. trying to get my rb25 240(the other red one in the pictures) running properly, and painting a bike i just picked up.

as for getting to the struts and fuel pump... everything in the inner bed is just tacked together, so i can easily remove the panels if needed. if worse comes to worse i can always run a hole saw down to the strut towers, and the fuel pump cover is visible on the back side of the panel, just not the easiest to get to.

*edit*
ha, i didn't realize that was you james. good to see your a** on here finally.

alright guys. here are updates.

I was forced to put off progress on the 240 truck, to take care of my ever failing RB25 hatch. Between fits of rage I did managed to put the final pieces of the KA engine together. With the Rb car temporarily running, I was finally able to put some time back into the truck chassis. Since I had yet to decide on a final color for the truck, the engine bay was sprayed a neutral Mercedes gloss grey. The chassis was then loaded onto the rollback, and taken back to my parent's house for the engine install.

After the engine was slid into place, and the electronics installed the first start up attempt was made... and nothing. After some fussing it was discovered the distributor was installed one tooth off. A quick fix, and the engine roared to life. The valve cover was then removed and sprayed highlighter yellow, and the stock ignition coil was replaced by a MSD Blaster. The next morning, the car was loaded back onto the rollback, and taken back to Carriage Auto Center where the body work would continue.

Image

Image

Once back at the shop, I proceed to finish the body work on both fenders and doors, and hood. That was quickly followed by prepping and put a final fit on the front and rear bumpers, as well as the side skirts.

The next update will include final body work, primer, paint, and arrival of the new wheels.
Below is video of the start up, and some random pictures that are build related, but not posted above.

Carriage Auto Center is owned by my family. We have dealer plates to let customers test drive cars on the lot.

Wow pulling it off. I kinda like the highlighter yellow valve cover. Get some windows, seats and a dash in (and something passed the header lol), and thats it.

Cant wait to see the finished product.
