So, for the past 3 months or so, my brakes have been squealing when I reserve after the car has sat for a bit. I notice it the most when backing out of my garage in the morning & when backing out of my indoor parking sport at work at the end of the day. If I drive for awhile & then reverse, it doesn't happen. Don't know if its coming from front or rear brakes.

I've not experienced any other brake issues & I currently have between 38K & 39K on my 2009 Versa (purchased new).

I'm going to be driving several hundred kms to ski in a few weeks so I'd like to have this put to rest before then. Most people I speak to are inclined to say I need new pads (clearly they think its a front brake issue then). But one person suggested it could be dirt on the front pads. Im pretty sure if I take it to a garage, they are going to suggest new pads without even taking the time to look at the brakes & since they likely wont hear the noise (cause the car will be warm when its dropped off). I'd like to go in knowledgeable so as to not be taken advantage of (I'm a female).

Thanks!

The pads have 38k on them. They're worn. And the fronts are always going to wear faster, as 70% of braking is accomplished through the front brake.

However, if they offer to "turn the rotors" or "resurface the rotors," that wouldn't really be necessary at only 38K miles. Unless the brakes vibrate when you press them.

A better option is always to find a friend who can do that stuff themselves. Brake pads are stupid easy to replace though. If you're remotely interested in learning how to work on cars, that's the best place to start. (it was the first thing I ever did on my car too)

Normally, I'd get one of my three car friends to replace them. But alas, they are all out of town for the next while. They're not even around to answer my questions!

My gut instinct was the pads needed to be replaced. The "only in reverse" thing was making me question tho. I'm not experiencing any vibrations, so at least now I know to get a second opinion if they start suggesting rotor repairs.

Thanks!

I dont think this has anything to do with worn pads i too experience the exact same thing as the "op" mentions and my break pads are fairly new fjust few thousand miles on them. Can we get more input on this issue?
