Introduction:

The following pics are from an article that died. The guy filled through the stick shift which to me is the hard way. I just used a $10 fluid pump. I did not raise vehicle. I just found a flat area. You want to fill until the fluid starts spilling out the fill hole.See the Differential oil change article because it is a similar procedure.

Oil

You need GL4 for manual tranny. 5 1/8 american pints. I bought an oil that was good for both GL 4 and 5 so I could use on differential also. (Note that canadian and american pints are different sizes.)

Tools

-17mm ? socket for fill plug. it is male.-.5 inch socket for drain plug. it is female. It is actually .51 so you may want to put thin rag over socket or get 13mm square socket from nissan.(people strip this)-slip ring pliers if you fill through shifter

Fill until it spills out fill hole.

Transmission oil change article that is DEAD

Nice write-up man. I used the pump kit. It does take some time but at least you wont have to take out the shifter

Thanks. The original completely died but I had the pictures. cant remember what the guy said.

Unrelated, apparently, you should use a 13mm square socket for drain plug. which is .51 inches. A lot of people strip the plug. Maybe wrap a rag around the .5 socket.

Same here. Screw taking out the shifter. Using a pump, the fluid starts to overflow just the same when it's full.

My drain plug WILL NOT come off no matter what. I used a pump to drain all the fluid the best I could. Any suggestions for the future?

I assume you have some kind of silicone seal on the thread plugs? Heating it might help. I dont know the consequences of heating a steel plug in an aluminum tranny. A couple people have done it that way. For me, the answer was a long handle or a cheat bar. Just be careful not to strip hole because it is .51 inches not .50.

It's been so long since I tried I honestly don't remember exactly what's wrong with it. I know for a fact it's way too tight and I've seemingly tried all the tricks to get it off. It might be slightly stripped too. Basically, previous owner's fault.

I used lucas, it cleared up my 1st 3rd and reverse grinds. Trans feels smoother in general now.

Good lord.... Please don't fill through the shifter unless you have the precise amount measured out and ready to go in...

Nice new write up, though.

Nothing wrong with going through the shifter. You just need to break open the fill plug to watch for when fluid drips out to know you got enough in.

That happened to me a long time ago. I was trying to change the fluid on the road. I had a breaker bar on the drain plug and it just started to strip. I waited until I got home and hit it with the impact gun. Came right out. If you don't have an impact... you could try using a punch and a steel hammer to lightly tap the plug and try again.

I have never done this properly.. always did it through the shifter....and always emptied it out the tail of the transmission when pulling the motor O_o....have never put the right amount in either i always used 2 1 quart bottles and called it done. Never had any transmission problems related to internals though.....have had a bad clutch fork for quite a while tho.

other than the manual saying to use a GL4 oil, why use a GL4 over the GL5? I bought GL5 because I couldn't find GL4 when I was out.
