I had the incredible fortune to drive a 71' Pantera over 1,000 miles courtesy of my gf's really generous/rich uncle who took us on cruises, meets, and canyon runs. One word to describe that car is "brutal".
Huge meaty tires. A fire breathing, slightly modified Cleveland V8 sitting inches behind your head. A clutch you had to roundhouse kick to disengage and an equally stubborn ZF transaxle (at least you didn't have to shift it much). Inoperable A/C leaving the cabin a broiler pretty much all the time. Traffic in the thing tested your endurance.
But man, give it a winding open road or a race track, it's like the the gates of Hell have opened blasting Pantera with ear-bleeding volume. Such a low center of gravity and stiff suspension meant near non-existent weight transfer and the huge contact patch provided oodles of grip...until you hit the limits. At which point the back bumper would try to touch the front one. Modulating all that power through such stubborn controls was a truly evil experience. Pretty much the only time I wasn't sure I was about to die was on the straights, and there are hardly any on
http://oregonraceway.com/ It was such an on-off car it was scary. Her uncle had been driving it for 10 years and still had issues with it. Still, an awesome, if terrifying car to push to it's limits.
Hope someone nifty buys them and keeps the name afloat.
