Anyone ever replace their front main seal?

Information on the naturally-aspirated KA24E and KA24DE engines.

If you have the right tools, 1 hour.

If not, a few hours.

Right tools = pulley puller, seal puller, and your basic mechanics set.

i did mine like 2 or 3 days ago...pretty simple job.

my fan was already off so i just needed to get the crank pulley off then pull out the old seal. it took me no more than 45 mins.

the hardest part was getting the old seal out!!

putting in the new one and the rest back together is cake and takes like 5-10 mins.

Remove fan, remove fan shroud, remove belts, remove pulley bolt, remove pulley. The seal can be removed gently with a large flat head screwdriver, mine came out with ease.

yep thats what i did. Unfortunately the idiot at the local autozone gave me the rear main seal, so i had to go switch it. Only to find out that AUTOZONE's front seals didnt fit. went to Nissan and got the OEM one for 11 bucks. PERFECT fit.

Congrats, pour yourself a beer and feel good that now you don't have to listen to the ol' lady yell at you about the oil spill you were previously leaving under your car on the driveway.

i'm in the middle of replacing my Seal, got the old one out and the new one in.

I used the old seal to place on top of the new one while hitting the seal in and It went too far back and setted against the back part of the hole where the seal goes in, Is thisokay? or do I have to have the seal flush with the opening of where it goes into?

I'm about to do this soon. Possibly on Tursday.

[/quote]1) so I have to find out how to remove the fan, then I can take the fan shroud out. But to take the shroud out, I must take the intake off first.

2) Remove belts. how do I do this? Please be as detailed as possible.

3) Remove pulley bolt. I hear this is a hard one to do. soak bolt in WD-40, 27mm socket on a breaker bar. how do I prevent it from rotating when I try to loosen it?

4) Remove pulley. Can I rent a pulley puller form autozone?

5) remove seal with screwdriver. sounds simple enough.

Anthing I must know about? Will oil come rushing out?

When putting these things back together, what is the torque specs for the pulley bolt?

1) so I have to find out how to remove the fan, then I can take the fan shroud out. But to take the shroud out, I must take the intake off first.

-4 10mm nuts hold fan on. i used a large screwdriver to hold the fan still.

2) Remove belts. how do I do this? Please be as detailed as possible.

-look up belt in tutorial link in my signature

3) Remove pulley bolt. I hear this is a hard one to do. soak bolt in WD-40, 27mm socket on a breaker bar. how do I prevent it from rotating when I try to loosen it? i have not done this but someone said to rest the bar on the ground and crank. i guess with the engine disable somehow

4) Remove pulley. Can I rent a pulley puller form autozone?

probably. if it is not out. they are cheap to buy. you need one that will fit.

see timing chain replacement tutorial for picture

5) remove seal with screwdriver. sounds simple enough.

Anthing I must know about? Will oil come rushing out?

not sure but i think people say to grease the new seal

When putting these things back together, what is the torque specs for the pulley bolt?

prolly no spec. i guess you tighten with it in gear? not sure

you won't be able to yank off that upper shroud without removing upper radiator hose cause its in the way. don't forget to drain coolant.
