Anyone ever have this coil issue?

Postby BobWilson » Mon Mar 19, 2012 5:45 pm

I want to know if I'm nuts, or overly optimistic, or what.

A few days ago the J30 started running rough, like it was missing a cylinder. I'm thinking injector of course, then remembered I had a spare coil so I'd try that first.

While getting ready to start working, I familiarized myself with the coil connector by unplugging, then plugging back. Started up the car and it's running fine. OK, not unusual, it's done that briefly a couple of times in the past couple of days. Put in R and let it pull against itself. Still fine. Drove it up and down the street (easy and hard) and still running fine.

That's when I remembered this all started when I ran over the asphalt bump between the main road and my street. Could it be possible that the coil connector jarred just loose enough to not make a spark?

If this is the case, it's the stupidest fix of all time. :mike

Anyone else ever have anything remotely similar??

It's early, so I'm not convinced yet. Still have that spare coil on deck ready to go in.

I'll keep everyone informed in case it happens to anyone else.

A failing fuel injector of mine worked intermittently for a while, before it failed completely, but each time that it wasn't working properly the CEL turned ON.

Don't know if a disconnected or not working coil pack triggers the CEL light.

On only one occasion soon after I'd fixed everything and parked the wet car in a VERY cold damp garage, upon starting it the next day it was very difficult to start (held the gas pedal to the floor) and it ran very rough until things cleared up, almost as if it had been flooded. Fortunately this hasn't happened again, yet.
