I'm somewhat confused by nissan's use of CAN on the G35. While the car does use CAN I can't seem to figure out if a CAN enabled scan tool is needed to get at the diag data. My DLC (2004 G35c) has pins 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 14, 16.

I noticed from the info on scantool.net that the 2003 G35 is ISO9141, but I'm not sure about 2004. I heard that there was some sort of switch during that timeframe.

If it's the case that the 2004 g35 is ISO9141, then what are the CAN pins 6 and 14 used for?

if your car has can, you should not be able to access it without a scantool designed for can. even nissans consult requires a converter to use with can equipped cars.

A generic scan tool can pull codes from the engine control module as it has in the past. Nissans can system will not be effected by the scan tool. But you can not access can information with the scan tool. As Chris said you need a special set up to access that system even with consult. Those 2 pins in the ALDL are for the consult to actually jump on the can lines and perform CAN diagnostics. One of those pins is the high speed dataline and the other is the low speed data line. The whole purpose of the CAN is to reduce the amount of wires between the control units for communication. Instead each control unit has a processor that coverts voltage inputs from sensors into digital pulses. That info along with an address code is sent through the lines and only the units that need to use the info recognize the address code once they see that they apply the second half of the info. The converted digital pulse. The consult has the ability to send a request for all the info via those 2 can lines in the ALDL and can recieve it back throug those lines. It can only do this if it has the convertor to send and recieve the data pulses and an address code.

Controller Area Network. It is basically an internet within your car. Drastically improved from the old LAN system nissan used to use. All the control units in the car communicate on 2 data lines, 1 high speed data line and one low speed data line.

Anyone have even more detail on the CAN system? Is their any aftermarket signal modifiers? Im trying to have working cruise control on a vq35 swap.

Seems that at least a few people know whats up with the CAN system here, so I have a question:

in the service manual for the 2010 (and presumably the 2011) G37, there are a few references to settable modes for certain items. Windshield wipers, door locks, etc. My question is if Im reading the options correctly.

For door locks, there is a setting for "automatic lock" time delay. Does this mean the door locks can work passively? i.e. once I turn off the car and close the drivers door, after a certain time they will lock by themselves.

For windshield wipers, there is a setting that allows the intermittent speed to be tied to a timer (default) or to take into account vehicle speed. kinda like the auto rain sensing wipers, without having the tech package.

There were a couple others, Ill dig them up, but ultimately the question is if these things affect what it seems like they do, and if I could find something that could change them (obviously Consult III would do it, but I dont have the $$$......I found something called AutoEnginuity that seems to be able to set parameters as long as you have the Infiniti enhanced interface).

Any ideas?

automatic lock is likely referring to the rerlock feature after the car has been unlocked by remote and not entered within 30 sec OR it is referring to the auto lock feature with vehicle speed. Aftermarket devices may not be able to set all parameters, but a CONSULT III will likely do it. If an aftermarket programmer manufacturer reverse engineered or intercepted the messages a CONSULT III sends along the CAN to toggle those features on and off, then it too could change them, but I haven't seen this functionality widely available through an aftermarket piece for Nissans.
