Hi everyone, I'd like your opinion on the sale of my fathers 1990 q45.

He bought it in the early 90's when it had approx 20k miles on it.
It now has 62k original miles.

He quit driving it a few years ago and it has not been started in 1-2 years.
He started it up and let it run every few months until it ran out of fuel.
The brakes need work (probably just a master cylinder, won't build pressure)
Needs tires.
Currently has 16" OZ Racing wheels and also a set of the original wheels/tires.
Had new injectors installed 10k miles ago (stock injectors)
No transmission issues at all.

Aside from the "boo boo" on the front bumper just about the license plate frame, it's in mint condition.
All original paint in beautiful condition. Never any wrecks, paint or body work.
The interior is also mint.
Pushed the car out of the garage to do some work on it and completely forgot that the brakes did not work and bumped into the receiver on the back of my truck.

Anyway... my dad was just going to have it hauled away to the junk yard since it needed some work and did not think anyone would want a 25yo car, but I thought it would be best to see what other fellow Q45 enthusiasts thoughts were on trying to sell it instead.
The car is in Denver, Colorado

This is not a "for sale" listing, I'm not trying to circumvent any posting rules.

Here are some pics taken yesterday... Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you for saving it from the salvage yard! Some interior pictures would also be welcome... Was there an issue with it that caused your dad to stop driving the car?

You've come to the right place. Someone will buy this at some price, and I guarantee it'll be more than your dad could get at a salvage yard. :bigthumb:

I'll get some additional pics in the next few days...

If memory serves... it needed tires and was not being driven much except to the bank, post office, etc...
He then stumbled upon an '05 Mercedes E55 (a rocket on wheels, 0-60 in 4.4 sec) still under warranty at local benz dealer and bought it.
Soon after he bought a 90 Porsche 964.
With these two super fun vehicles to drive, the Q just sat in the garage, started occasionally, but not driven.
He is 78yo now and none of his 5 cars get are driven more than 1,500 miles a year.
The brakes worked fine when he stopped driving it (master cylinder maybe).
Failed I think just from sitting in the garage and not being driven, just a guess though.
When I have time (currently trying to finish a landscaping project), I think I'll get the brakes operational again so at least a future potential buyer can test drive it.

I'll have to do a bit more research on where to price it.

That is easily worth 3x any offer the junker would offer!

I had one person suggest that an Infiniti dealer may be interested in it since its Infiniti's 25th anniversary.
They may want to display it in the showroom.
There are a couple close by, including the original dealer who sold it new.
I'll snap a whole slew of photos and email the owners.
Worth a shot I guess.

Just a quick update...

On June 4th a hail storm rolled through and golf ball sized hail caused significant damage.
The claims adjuster looked at it this morning and with a combination of paintless dent repair and replacing the hood and trunk, the repair estimate was approx. $7,500.

Obviously, more than it is worth, so now we have to wait 5-7 days for their total loss proposal.
The adjuster did say in his report to the insurance company that it is the cleanest 1st generation Q45 he has ever seen and overall was in excellent condition.

Will update when I have more information.

Ironically, my father moved to Denver in 1978 and since then, he never had any hail damage on any of his cars.
Just under 2 weeks after moving the Q45 to the storage lot, it gets taken out by hail and no hail at all at his home just a few miles away.

:frown: damn that sucks, sorry to hear

hopefully the insurance will pony up good money for it. If not, parting it out might be an option, although it is a pain in the arse. So the car is still in Colorado?

Ugh... I was reading this thread, thinking "Do I have a couple days off to run up to CO with my trailer?"

Definitely try to keep her and offload some parts - The early Q has a great following here at NICOclub (it was one of the 2 vehicles that 'founded' this group)... and LOTS of members would be ecstatic to be able to buy some low-mileage parts. Definitely worth the effort.

Tell Pops thanks for keeping her. She was quite the overachiever in her day.

personally I would still keep the Q and not tear it down if that was the only damage.... your car, your choice.....i meant your father's car

My father and I have our hands full caring for my mother who has alzheimers and I'm pretty sure that if the insurance company comes back with a good number, I think my father would probably just take it and be done with it.

... but we will see.

Sad to see it go, but I think the my Father did well, They started at $4,300 and after some additional hi resolution pics sent to the claim center, we got them up to $5,025.

Received the check today and the car will be towed away tomorrow.

I'll update this afternoon when I have confirmation of where it's headed.
At this point in time I think it's...

and here is the link to the TRA (Total Resource Auctions) auction site...

It's not listed yet, since it's not in their possession yet.

I'm sorry to jump in, but at this point the conversation should taken off site.

The auction was today. My opening bid of $25 was driven all the way up to $500.

Now just to send the check tomorrow and arrange shipping to Ohio.

Woot Woot!

Yes, I did get it.

The semi arrived at my house Tuesday about 6:30 pm. I have never truck shipped a car before. I am most amazed that I could get the car shipped directly to my house for less than 50 cents per mile. Over 1,200 miles from Denver area me in Northern Ohio near the shores of Lake Erie. $600 to ship, total.

Here are some photos the night it was delivered. It arrived with a dead battery. I sort of expected this because in the auction photos, it looked as if the passanger's door was not completely shut. The car would start with a my jump pack. I kept it on a battery charger all day and it seems better. I still have not really driver the car. It was brought off the truck under its own power but with a bad master cylinder that leaves only the parking brake to stop it. I then drove it from the road back to my driveway only using the parking brake too.
Yes, there is hail damage to the hood and roof but to me that is not a huge deal. I am more concerned with 20ft looks and functionality and you can not see it from a distance. I live in the rust belt and 5 year old cars do not look as clean underneath as this 25 yr old car does!

I have not really had time to dig into the car but hope to some this weekend. The interior is perfect in every way. Every switch works. The only problem I have found is what seems to be a bad ground in the radio. Only one speaker (dr door) is working and when you touch the volume knob, there is a "static/crackling". If I can not chase the problem then I will try to source another stock '90 headunit.

Okay, onto pictures:

Damn, that IS clean... and I'm in AZ - I know clean! :)

Definitely worth restoring. The crackling in the volume knob means the potentiometer needs cleaning and lubricating.

I'd find a local dealership, make friends with the PDR guy, and see if he'd do all the dings for a couple hundred bucks and a case of beer.

AZ,
My goal after taking this to the dragstrip/autocross/concouse event is to keep this car and get it back to as much of a perfect example as possible.
This will become "toy" car. It might even get me into the car show scene. That is not a scene I have ever tried to be into but, I'm getting older at 48 yrs old. The car show and cruise-in scene around here is pretty much all American Iron but something from the inaugural year of Infiniti might bring some interest. Lets face it, these were not even popular cars when they were popular/available.

As a 25 yr old car, in Ohio it qualifies for Historic Plates. ha.

Today I cleaned the engine using only a cleaner/degreaser named Awesome (typically sold in dollar stores), a scrub brush (only used occasionally) and the hose.
I am amazed at the results!

Nice work. I like that 'Awesome' stuff, I use it in our floor scrubber for the shop. :)
