Post

Hello all!

This is my first post on this forum as I only became an Infiniti owner as of 12 hours ago. :) I'd love to get input on whether or not to buy an extended warranty on my new (used) car.

Here's what I bought:
- 2011 G25x (used, non CPO)
- 14,500 miles, regular maintenance, no accidents
- 1yr/45k left on original warranty

Here's the extended ("Elite") warranty in question:
- Extends warranty by +4yr/60k (effectively, covered until 5yr OR 74k miles total, whichever comes first)
- Bumper-to-bumper coverage (same as original)
- $100 deductible per visit
- Transferrable and refundable (pro-rata)

I've heard this is a reliable car, so the question is... should I buy this warranty? Is it really worth it??

Other information that may be helpful:
- Currently live in Palo Alto, will be moving to Seattle next July
- Will likely only drive 7-8k miles max in next year; after that ~10-12k per year
- Plan to own car for at least 4-5 years

Thanks in advance everyone!

-A

The vehicle is pretty reliable. Personally I stay away from extended warranties and thus far, with Nissan vehicles, it's been fine. For the last 12 years the only issue I've had with 4 Nissan/Infiniti's is when an alternator went out at 100k miles in our '07 G35s sedan. Otherwise it's been maintenance items like brake pads/rotors and normal fluid changes which are usually not covered anyway.

If the cost is worth the peace of mind then it may be worth it. Really pay attention to the T&C's of the contract.

I'm never a huge fan of extended warranties. Personally I think they're just another way for the finance suits to wring more money out of new car buyers. Most will promise the world and tip-toe around the specifics of the coverage you're actually getting. Then one day you'll come up to my window to pay for your repairs, look at the bill and go "But the guy told me my extended warranty would cover all this!" And I'll respond "I'm sorry they told you that but this is what it is..." And now I'm the bad guy. Yeah not a huge fan...

If you wait until the warranty is about to expire you will get offers for extended warranty vie email or in the mail that are priced better if getting one is required for peace of mind.
