Ive seen a few posts where people with stock or stockish KA's have been taking timing to 23 and 24. What benefit does this have? What are the power gains to be had from this? I thought timing was only supposed to be adjusted with the use of nitrous or boost?

Would this be ok to do to in a KA24E with intake exhaust and header that runs 93 octane all the time?

It helps offset the stock timing curve, but it's really not necessary and will make your car run funny at low RPM.

You can gain a little performance NA by adjusting your base timing. KA24e stock base timing is 15 degrees, if your distributor is indexed properly you should be able to get a maximum of 18/19 degrees base by adjusting your distributor fully clockwise. With premium gas you should not get any detonation at all, and your idle will not be affected, and you will get an increase in performance all across the board.

Just for sohc reference, with ~10.5:1 CR you can go 18 degrees base with premium fuel and should not have any detonation. If your running stock compression ratio you should not have any problems at all. Thats what i used to run when i had the stock system on mine.

Currently with my sohc i am running ~22degrees timing at an idle of 1100rpm, with a very aggressive timing map across the board.

So in other words, grab your timing light, a 12mm tool, and go for it. Keep an keen ear when under low rpm high load conditions, as long as your exhaust is not extremely loud you should be able to hear any detonation.

Well my head is being worked on right now but when i throw everything back together i can just set it higher using the distributor? I have an N1 single tip exhaust injen intake and hotshot header so my car is pretty loud. I dont know what detonation sounds like or how to adjust my idle so im guessing i should prolly just leave it as is cause i just dont seem to have enough intel to know wtf im doing lol

Man, I would've kept the 2 3/8" piping. Why go more restrictive?

1 3/8 is way too small for a ka to breathe with. Stock piping is 2 inches, get something bigger.

i have mostly bolt ons and my car ran really lean with all of them so i adjusted my timing but i cant remember how much it made a world of difference

im bringing this old post back simply because tonight a 240 rolled up next to me and we were conversating and what not about what we have in our cars and he brought up that he advanced his timing and he got a significant power gain out of it. i was shocked when he beat me in a little pull in the industrial park because he had me right off the line while he was still spinning tires. i guess im asking do you really get a power gain thats worth advancing your timing? also i think his diff was welded would that make him get a better jump, i havent really looked into this stuff i just bought my first 240 a couple months ago.

Couldn't you have started a new thread in 240gen about this? You'd get a lot less crap for it.
