Adding roofrails

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I have a 2010 EX35 AWD Journey, but I don't have roofrails. When I went to do a 10,000 mile service, I asked if I could add it even if it would be costly, I just like the way it looks. The sales rep who I purchased the car from told me it is welded on to roof? I don't have intention of carrying anything on top whatsoever, but aesthetically I thought it would be a good buy. Anyone know if its possible otherwise?

i thought it should be possible. but the dealership told me the same thing. that its welded.
but i have asked my bodyshop, they can order it and install it.
but its not cheap. not cheap at all.
each piece cost around $400, that will be $800 just for the parts. and plus labor.
will come out to around $1000

The rails are bolted on to the roof with total of 8 bolts
You will need to drill/open 8 holes about 1.5" in diameter on the surface of the roof for the rails to sit in
There are also 8 nuts that the actual bolt bolted into, these nuts are welded inside the roof opening
Whoever is doing this have to be really precise about the opening and position of the nuts so the rail fit. The opening also have to be precise because if the opening is too big water will leak into your roof

Parts you need will be the actual rails, 8 bolts, 4 rail caps, and 4 rubber seals
If you can find someone who was forced to get the one with rails, maybe you can just offer them for the cost of seal the holes and re-paint the roof (I figure about $400) and you get yourself a set of rails for cheap.

It bothers me so badly, I didn't notice I didn't have it until a month after owning it and seeing someone else with it. I have the AWD Journey package but I think you need the Navigation package to get them. I wouldn't mind upto $2,000 but I would be concerned about roof leaks as much as them tearing pieces of my car apart to install it.

Basically it cannot be done, I had the same deal with my 2010, my local dealer would not even attempt to put rails on and I did not want them fooling with the car. I really wish Infiniti would learn from other brands such as BMW and make every car compatable with or without rails, I prefer the way the EX looks without the rails, but I got them anyway, just for the rare times I want to put a bike or kayak on top of the car, besides with the little legroom the back seat offers, my passangers may be more comfortabale up there as well.

My 2011 EX35 came with roof rails. For the sake of practicality I added roof rail crossbars. Although the roof rails, in my opinion, enhance the lines of the vehicle, the roof rail crossbars do not.

Maybe dumb question, but can crossbars be added to the ex without roofrails? I've seen many cars with no rails but crossbars installed that hooked into a roof well or the doorframes. There is well on the sides of the roof on the EX that is mostly filled in with a rubber sealer but has some space (a crack if you will) on the sides. The doorframes don't look like they would accommodate a crossbar hooked into them.

Any thoughts?

I'm wondering, did you buy this Car new from a Dealership ?

This is a silly question, but if you did buy it new from a Dealership, did you not see other EX35's on the Lot with Roof-Rails?

Here is a spirited Thread on Roof-Rails >>> roof-rails-look-lousy-on-ex35-t516940.html

In that Thread, maybe you could locate one of the guys that hates Roof-Rails and swap Cars. :chuckle:

The were, I saw all the cars on the lot, there wasn't a single EX35 without roof rails and it was at night when I took delivery of the car. I assumed they all had roofrails, consider I bought the AWD Journey I didn't realized they changed the package from when I originally looked at them in the previous year models. *EDIT* Sorry, mislead by a comment, my apologies.

Wow... I'm not sure where that last part came from?

I was merely wondering why the Dealership/Sales-person didn't tell you about Roof-racks.

Sorry, didn't see you were joking around, I couldn't see the whole comment on my iPhone. Sorry about that, really am. Maybe a little to early for me to be reading the forums in the morning, I apologize for the misunderstanding on my part. I asked the sales man who I purchased my 4th car in a row from, he said my car has roofrails without even looking at it, when I showed him (when I asked if it could be installed seperately) he just said "Oh, I thought it did like every other car on our lot.". Basically I was mislead, but I do I wish I could do a swap =P. Should have checked it out before hand, was really late in the night to run through the car, usually if I do it'd be all over the car during delivery.
