hi,
so my rear stop lights stopped working recently. but the brake light inside the rear window above the trunk works fine. that makes me think the fuse and stop switch are fine.
but it's kinda weird that both the bottom (regular) brake lights failed together. could it be anything else other than the bulbs?

in addition, and probably unrelated, one of the regular tail lights doesn't light up either when the headlights are on. the other three tail lights function properly; only, they don't illuminate when brake is pressed.
turn signals work as well.

any suggestions will be very helpful please

Did you check the bulbs first?

not yet. wanted to check if it's something else before buying the bulbs.
also, don't know how to open up the back :) so hoped to avoid that if possible.

could both bulbs have died at the same time?

On page 10 of 81 look at the stop light switch by the brake pedal
Push the switch in and out and have an assistant tell you if
the brakes are going on and off

When the switch button is fully extended your brake lights come
on. The distance between the pedal and the length of the button
extension will determine whether your lights come on

If your rubber plug came out i went to Harbon Freight and bought
a magnet to fill in the hole

You have to put your head where your feet normally go to see all of this!

thanks!
but then would the top window brake light work if this was the problem?
i tried finding the stop light switch but gave up, realizing it might wasted effort since window brake did light up.

I would first put in new bulbs for each side

If one of the bulbs does not light up, move the wiring from the lit
side to the unlit side and see if it works

If the previously unlit bulb now works then you know if was the wiring
harness.

I'm having the same problem in my 96 I30.

With the light switch off:
The left brake light is perfect.
The right brake light is dim.

With the light switch on:
The left brake lights are perfect.
The right brake lights don't work at all.

The third brake light in the center works as it should.

All new bulbs.
